Sad Weekend for racing fans - looking at the crash the poor guy (who was only 19) was gone before he left the track, but like Pete says it's a very rare occurrence these days - the following riders could do absolutely nothing.

The Moto GP website has an article explaining why the race wasn't stopped, apparently it wouldn't have helped the medical staff in any way

@ pb The accident was horrible and if the organisers didn't know how serious it was then their in the wrong job.It happened at one the fastest parts of the circuit where there was a very close battle for the lead involving 5/6 riders.Tomizawa was in the middle of the pack when he appeared to lose the front end of the bike mid corner. As he fell he has hit first by the following Alex De Angelis and then by Scott Redding (both of whom would have been travelling at well over 100MPH) .De Angelis got up after the accident but neither Redding nor Tomizawa appeared to be moving.Neither of the 2 following riders could have done anything to avoid Tomizawa and I really feel for them. But it was a bad call not to stop the race and attend to the 2 guys who didn't get up.Not only that, the marshalls then appeared to drop Tomizawa's stretcher as they carted him off.

@ Chris yeah sadly 13 year old American Peter Lenz was killed at Indy last weekend.Apparently he too was hit by a following bike after he had crashed. These incidents are extremely rare in circuit racing and to have 2 in the space of a week is just unbelievable.

I thought they only knew he was in a bad way during the race, I think they would have stopped the race if he'd died at the time, as it was they'd only got word during the Moto GP race after (I believe).

I don't think they would be right to stop an unrelated race when they heard, but they obviously had a subdued celebration anyway and everyone was visibly upset.

But unless they change the way the riders race this is going to keep happening, it's like F1 pre-90's before they worked out how to stop killing drivers (though even then we had events like the Massa incident last year).

I've heard that a young MotoGP rider was also killed earlier in the week? 12 year old?

Have to agree with TG,it was disgraceful the race was not stopped. It appears the sports organisers have learned little since Daijiro Kato's accident back in 2003 (when the race was allowed to continue and even the podium celebrations went ahead with the top 3 riders unaware Kato had died).I suppose TV schedules have something to do with these decisions ?.

Feel desperately sorry for Scott Redding and Alex De Angelis, there was nothing either of them could have done to avoid the accident.

As for Shoya Tomizawa he was a great racer,a real terrier. He was without doubt one of the best riders in the Moto 2 class and it is very sad to have lost him in this way.

RIP

In other news Cal Crutchlow has been confirmed at Tech 3 Yamaha for 2011 with Marco Melandri taking his place in the factory Yamaha WSBK squad.

I didn't watch the race that the crash happened, only heard about it at the end. It was so sad to see the likes of Rossi ecstatic with his fans, then coming in, being told and suddenly being deflated. The only thing Lorenzo said was that he didn't want to talk about the race.

For those who don't know what we're on about, here's the crash. Discretion is advised, it's a truly horrible crash.

RIP Shoya Tomizawa

I love all motorsports whether it be 2 or 4 wheels, and I hate it when things like this happen within the sport, and it's totally sick that the race wasn't red flagged immediatly!!!!!!!

Yeah,I'm confident Rossi and his crew will sort that Duke out for next season, never write that guy off.

Anyone still not convinced that Ben Spies is the real deal check out this .Those Tech 3 bikes were by far the slowest things in a straight line last weekend.Just look at the way Pedrosa blasted past him in the race, makes the job he did even more remarkable IMO.

Where the hell is Numnut these days ?

Surely Rossi is going to be a big contender next time around? If he can finish 4th unfit, he's got to be a favourite.
