For me, its not started off at all like any of the previous games, they seemed to throw you into the action straight off, you got to actually do some playing while the story got off to a rushing start, this game hasnt done that to me yet, and this is one of the most important parts of the game.
You have to say that a game really needs a good begining to get things up and running, FF10 starts pretty slow....then with the blitzball scene it gets really good and im starting to think im back in FF, them something strange happens and the game just slowed down again.
Its not all bad, im intrigued to find out whats happening next, and it does seem to be building to something big, its just that, well, i think the graphics may have gone to Squares head at the minute, so far i havent played, i have watched, i hope its starts to improve in that aspect soon.
Got to say though, the graphics and character animations are very nice indeed, but still, a little more play would be nice sometime soon.
I did it in FF8 and got my characters to level 99 - all of them, including the GFs. In that game I had a great strategy which worked so well.
There's bound to be somewhere to level up though. In FF8 there was the Island closest to hell, in FF9 there was that bit with the Grand Dragons - I'm sure they'll be somewhere in FF10 - you've just got to find it.

Believe it or not, your game is just beginning! I'm on 65+ hours now, (not including a couple of times where I turned of the PS2 without saving doh), and was going to quit around 11pm tonight, until that is I discovered the 'Search' and 'Password' facilities on the map screen of the airship. That in itself is going to bring me into the 80+ hour range (probably more) by the time I've discovered most of it.
Then there's the monsters to collect for the trainer in the Calm Lands, the Blitzball players to level up, working out what those Mars/Venus/Saturn wotsits in my key items are for, and I've only just discovered the tactical joys of adding Double AP to Tidus' weapon and then having to switch between that and his Taming Sword during battles to catch all the monsters.
There's a few Al Bhed primers that I'm missing, I've got a few more Fortune Spheres (Sphere Grid or Aeon Abilities....that's the question...), I discovered my first Teleport Sphere, and I've yet to unlock Ultima on the Sphere Grid, and I've worked out how to get a couple of more Aeons after getting as far as Yojimbo. (I think there's 9 to get in total now, I've got six so far, but don't quote me on that because there's probably even more). Best distraction so far is the Sphere Theatre in Luca where you can replay all the FMV clips seen so far, as well as all the ingame music you've heard.
Going by the Reference for Auto-Abilities alone (access it from the Help option on the main ingame menu), I'm about 10% there till my characters fully level up. So that's about 1200 hours till full completion. Add another 5 minutes for looking for those border thingies.
More, next month, as it happens.
about to get on the boat again after sin destroyed the town
I knew it would be good, but I never expected it to be this good ;-)
