So Yankees, as always busy around deadline day and were quite successful. Abreu and Lidle for a bunch of minor league prospects of which only Smith looks half decent. Don't know too much about Lidle to be honest but Abreu will give another strong bat and some experienced coverage for Sheffield while he's out injured (and more than likely replace him for next season) Also picked up Craig Wilson for Chacon to give us another strong bat. Had him in my MVP Baseball 2005 team as well actually. Might mean Andy Phillips doesn't get as much time as he should though which is a shame.
Red Sox and Jays did nothing and we kept hold of Cano, Melky and Phillips so a good trade deadline time all around for the Yanks
Did I read that the Yankees did not take up the option on Mussina? I suppose they could still sign him but I would think that Mussina will probably retire now.
I'm also a little disappointed to see that Gagne has had his option declined too. He was lights out at the Dodgers but injury has wrecked what looked like a record closer career.
If they do get him then that's around 100 million bucks just for one player, a player with zero MLB experience and as such an unknown factor. Yea sure he had a good WBC but there's a difference between that and getting it done in MLB. The guy will have to go at least 20-25 wins a season just to actually make him seem worthwhile and that won't be happening. On top of that, the guy doesn't even want to go to Boston, earlier in the year he was saying how he only wanted to play for either team in New York.
Nice one Theo, we'll just get on with getting players like Zito, who are actually proven and for a fraction of the price.
Matz = Beckett mk 2 :-D
Another great deal, getting rid of a useless overpaid schmuck like Wright and getting in a young promising relief pitcher who was already 2nd best in the O's relief last year behind Chris Ray. Lovely.
Now go trade Pavano for Ichiro or something and you are officially God Cashman

Indeed

Well with the Red Sox reportedly screwing themselves to try and screw the Yankees by throwing crazy money at Matsuzaka for his bidding rights Zito should be a very big target for the Yankees. If they can get him and 1 or 2 of Marquis, Meche, Pettitte, Willis and Clemens then they'll actually have a dangerous pitching staff and a Yankees team with good pitching = an even more dangerous Yankees
Bubba Crosby has gone and a few young potential fielders are possibly going from the Yankees. The Yankees have to pick up Zito, surely?
> That has to be some injury to stop you playing for a whole year.
More with the surgery really, Tommy John surgery requires long rehab from it
Humberto Sanchez is an extremely promising prospect, he's got a 93-95mph heater, a good curveball and a decent change. He's got some minor niggles in his pitching mechanics but nothing that the pitching coaches down in the farm system can't sort out. Last season he was 10-6 with a 2.63 ERA across AA and AAA in what is primarily a hitters league. He's the bluechip prospect of the deal.
Whelan is a relief pitcher with a fast heater that goes around 94-95 and can top 96mph, a nice little sinking 2 seamer and a developing sinker that'll turn into a plus pitch when he gets better command. There was talk of him being hot-shotted to the Tiger's bullpen this coming year but the Yankees will probably put him in AAA for this year. He does have closer like stuff but the Tigers were probably going to use him as the set-up for Zumaya. He was 4-1 with a 2.67 ERA last season in the minors.
Claggett's also a reliever with a good 90's fastball and a good slider. Will probably do very well in AA this year or they may decide to test him out in AAA although probably not as that's already a pretty loaded up pitching staff. He was 7-2 with a 0.91 ERA and 14 saves.
Sheffield traded to Detroit for pitchers. Any of them good?
5-0 MLB "All-stars" against the Japanese All-stars.
J.D Drew also deciding to go on free agency, that's a big blow for L.A
