Formatted computer, speakers aren't working, no idea how to sort them.

Add and Remove Hardware doesn't work, says This device cannot start.

Worked fine before, not fiddled with any wires.

Ideas?

No, but they worked before the format, then an hour later they didn't.

I don't think it's the speakers.

Have you tried your speakers on something else?
-This would solve if your speakers are broken or if you didn't turn them on or whatever.

Have you tried other speakers on your computer?
-This would show you whether the computer is picking up the soundcard or whatever.

Uninstalled everything I could from the Sound Video and Games controller section of the Device Manager

Then when I did add new hardware, it installed everything fine apart from the C-Media AC97 Audio Device, where it said this device cannot start.

Is this what you meant?

Yeah most stuff uses generic drivers so your Windows CD will have installed them as part of the installation process. Obviously specific drivers are better but you can just get the generic windows ones.

I might be wrong though so don't take it as gospel

I'm guessing that it's detecting your onboard sound as your soundcard rather than your actual soundacard, and you're plugging in your speakers to your undetected soundacrd. A little rummage in Control Panel should help you out - you want to be setting your soundcard as the default - the drivers should already be on your comp somewhere.

That ones got me too =S

Hmmm. Is it onboard sound (i.e. the sound card is part of the motherboard)

Or a seperate sound card? (i.e. pci chip connected to the motherboard)

If it's onboard, do you know your motherboard details?

Have you tried doing windows update and seeing if that detects your sound card?

I formatted my comp a while ago and since then it has recognised my CDRW as a regular CD drive. I've looked for drivers and that but I can't find any for this model, and I can't seem to find it on any of the CDs I got with the computer (it's a Dell). It works fine as a CD drive but I can't use the RW function, because the damn thing doesn't know it's a CDRW! Arg.

It doesn't detect your speakers. It detects your soundcard.

Goto Run, type dxdiag and then enter.

Select the sound tab and what does it say in name etc?
