Formatted computer, speakers aren't working, no idea how to sort them.

Add and Remove Hardware doesn't work, says This device cannot start.

Worked fine before, not fiddled with any wires.

Ideas?

System Tray is the thing to the right of the taskbar, right?

It's got what I said above, as well as the time.

Which is pretty damn late...

It's there, but it's got a yellow exclamation mark and it says This Device Cannot Start.

Jees. That seems pretty bare. Where's the date stuff and the desktop themes stuff?

Or are you saying those are the things on top of the basics?

Besides, I don't think MSN should be in there?

"6. Open your Start/Settings/Control Panel/System/Hardware/Device Manager and make sure the name of your audio adapter is listed beside “Sound, video and game controllers.” If not, install your audio adapter’s driver from the installation CD. "

That implies the driver hasn't been loaded up successfully.

You tried that?

Now I know there isn't a speaker icon, but I have very basic speakers and only ME and it still has its own little speaker thing.

Is there any icon with a name even vaguely likely to be linked to your sound/speakers?

Yeah

There wasn't an Audio Option
Windows Audio was already on Started
The Sound Scheme was already on Windows Default

Maybe not, but it's irrelevant.

Have you done all the other stuff I asked you to do?

I'm still thinking it's the modem. A modem for output sound can't be right, can it?
