Add and Remove Hardware doesn't work, says This device cannot start.
Worked fine before, not fiddled with any wires.
Ideas?

That's like I said?
What's the problem?
Also try these sites:

General, but they might have what you're looking for.
I don't actually have an Audio bit, though I do have Windows Audio.

Not even a small speaker on a chipboard?
Try my second set of advice.
:)
Start > Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Component Services > Services. Make sure audio is enabled.
Start > Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Services > Windows Audio. Make sure "Windows Media" service is running. If it's not, right click on this service and select "start".
Start > Control Panel > Sounds (etc) and select a theme (Windows default is OK) -- or none of your sound hardware will work. You did not have to do this in Win9x.
:(
Make sure your "Line In" is not muted and the volume is turned up. Then also check the main (or master) volume as well.
Remove ticks from Wave/Wave Synth, LineIn and Mic mute boxes in Volume Control.
For a starts (if that's all possible).
