Pretty much confirmed news:

The Revolution will also be a wireless router for the home, connect broadband to it and it will allow nearby consoles to link and go online. Such as a DS for example.

Rumours:

Revolution will be VERY cheap, will be only a little more powerful than a Gamecube and vastly inferior to X-box 360 and PS3. There will be multiple controllers, touch screen, gyro and camera are all being touted.

If the latter is true then I told you Nintendo are gunning for a different market.

Well Nintendo aren't exactly strapped for cash.

Worked a treat, hasn't it?

Of course: that's the main problem here - there's not much else to improve upon graphics-wise. After the next lot of consoles, there's going to be feck all more improvement to be done in those terms.

And for this I did admire Ninty for realising this, and striving to do something different at first. But they're going about it the whole wrong way.

It's not really the machines that need to change - it's the industry.
There's a wealth of amazing game ideas out there, but as it is, there's practically no way to get them to the front. The massive publishers rule everything, and all they care about is their money - EA being the biggest ugly lump of rotting, quashing money-hungry sequel-splurging shitewash yet.

Even Ninty do it - I mean, they're still squeezing 70-year-old has-beens for the new ideas. Where's all the new talent? They crave freshness, but do nothing, because they want to play it safe with what they know.

It's just not good business sense.

That said, it could work if Nintendo buy loads of studios/hire lots of coders and get them working on exclusive titles churning out a good 12+ titles a year.

It still means most people will feel the need to buy a rival console for the thirdparty games though.

It's not going to happen anyway since Nintendo have their head firmly up EA's ass.

That's why 3rd party support is so infinitely important.
So other people can do what Ninty can't / don't want to / whatever.

I expect Oblivion will do it's very best.

First off, the next gen consoles still aren't powerful enough to do that.
Second off, for 95% of games, you wouldn't notice the difference between proper simulated physics and "faked physics".

I can see a good chance in the beat em up department to break away from this ancient "animation" technique and have some live AI models fighting intelligently, but still, NONE of these are the sorts of areas that Nintendo have EVER impressed. Heck, MS would be more suited to making a game like this rather than Nintendo.

I'm not saying that there's no need for powerful consoles at all. I think that the next gen step will be smaller than the last, but some interesting devellopments atleast. I think that Nintendo will be the ones to break the most ground in game design though.

A powerful physics engine that allows the entire game environment to be interactive would be a good start. That's something that isn't achievable with current technology and would change gaming.

They're making the sorts of games that they're interested in.
Simple as...

I mean, you might've heard me spouting about the billion ways Nintendo SHOULD have made Metroid Prime. Put me on the designer team for the next Gran Tourismo and I'd be too busy trying to stay awake to contribute anything. Meanwhile some motor-nerd would be perfect for GT, but would spend his entire time on a Metroid team trying to convince them what sort of wheels Samus needs.

Anysway, what sort of game do you want Nintendo to make anyway?
