Right,
1. How old is your GFX card?
2. AMD and Intel, right. AMD is cheaper, but they use P ratings to compare to Intel, so a AMD 2600+ XP has a slower MHz rating that an Intel P4 2.6GHz, but is in theory just as fast. Really, the price is the only big difference, both perform similarly (within reason). The only thing I don't like about AMD is the Chipsets (basically the part of the PC that makes all the parts comunicate) as they generaly arn't as good as Intels as they are my buy 3rd parties (Nvidia, VIA. SIS, etc). I prefer Intel myself, but many prefer AMD. It is really indifferent.

How do i tell the difference between a 2x2 and a 10x2?
I'm not very good with the inside of computers. Just installed a network card and that's about it really.
All I'll need to know is wether the Motherboard/Case is ATX/Micro ATX, which fromat you want to go for (AMD/Intel), and what type your GFx card is (including format AGP/PCI).

Yeah, this should be posible, but you will need to check a few things. Firstly, you need to check what form factor your case is. It is likly to be either be ATX or Micro ATX. To tell the difference simply check the size of the motherboard.
ATX will look like this:

Micro ATX will look like this:

Once you know which you can choose a compatible motherboard. However, if yours is Micro ATX, I would advise you by a new ATX case as well as the choose of Micro ATX motherboards is small and they tend to be low spec.
Right, next you will want to make sure your PSU (Power Supply Unit) is Intel P4 or AMD XP and above compatible (Image of PSU: http://www.globalwin.com.tw/products (SPACE) /power/images/sapphire.jpg ). As you say your PC is 5 years old, I dout this. Basically the compatible PSU's have an extra 5v connector which is like the 12v one that connects to the motherboard, but it made up of a 2x2 connector rather than a 10x2 one. If yours isn't (if it is 5 years old it won't be) You'll need a new PSU. My advise on PSUs is not to skimp, as you will end up with an unstable computer that crashes due to power shortages.
Finally, check you graphics card, is it PCI or is it AGP (looks like an indented PCI slot)? If its PCI your fine, but if its AGP and 5 years old it will require 3v rather than the current 1.5v . If it is an old AGP you will need a new GFx card as well, or to get a motherboard with inbuilt GFx.
Lastly, RAM. You will need new RAM as well for a new Motherboard, as older RAM is nolonger supported. You will need DDR SDRAM.
Right, as you can see it will not be cheep, even with low spec stuff. Heres some ruff prices
New ATX case: £20-£150
Motherboard: £50-£150
Processor: £25(Duron 1.6Ghz)-£650(P4 Extreme Edition)
GFx card: £30-£350 (get an ATI)
RAM: £30(cheap 256MB DDR PC2100)-£120(Corsair 512MB DDR XMS3200LL Low Latency Pro CAS2)
Have fun, and the best place to buy would be overclockers.co.uk
