Well, this is quite clearly wrong. This morning/last night I didn’t sleep at all, despite lying in bed for four whole hours trying to do so. Previously, I considered myself not to be a clear cut insomniac, as I could easily get to sleep when I felt tired – it was just a question of whether I wanted to, or as I now do, carry on reading/listening to music or study.

But last night was a first. I tried to sleep, by not thinking of anything, but that didn’t work. Then I went for the “concentrate on one boring thing” approach, but that didn’t work either. What I did do was think up some interesting stuff, such as coming up with new ideas for a little sketch that I intend to write, or whether I should get an Xbox or not. This I did for four hours.

There are quite a few other insomniacs in the forum, and wanted to know if they used any “techniques” that helped them to sleep, or failing that, what was suggested to them by others.
Oh, and should I see a doc for this?

I tend to find that 'trying' to think of nothing is a bad idea. I really don't have a technique - I just lay in bed, p*ssed off until I just nod off. Most of the time that works.

I used to suffer badly while I was between 15 - 18 and *nothing* worked. I usually found that instead of lying there *trying* to get to sleep, it helped if I sat up, turned on the light and read a book for 1/2 hour to 45 minutes, until my eyes started to go.

It worked for me, and 45 mins at a max is far, far better than lying there for hours at a time.

My worst was in bed at 10.30pm (Sunday, work the following day"
12am - 6.5 hours left
1am - 5.5 hours of kip if I get to sleep now
2am - 4.5 " "
3am - 3.5 " "
4am - 2.5 " "
5am - 1.5 " "
6am - .5 " "
6.10 - 20 mins
6.20 - 10 mins

6.25. Ho hum. Might as well get up.

Knackered all day. Thankfully, that was a one off.......

I've considered declaring myself an "insomniac" before, but sometimes I sleep like a baby, so it wouldn't sit well with the people properly deprived of sleep. I'm practically nocturnal now anyway - my sleeping pattern has shifted from 11pm-6am, to 2am-10am. It's become a routine, but I take ages to actually get to sleep. I quite like being awake so early in the morning though. It's so quiet, and my mind is always open when I'm a bit dozy.

Try taking a strong anti-histamine as contained in things likt nytol or syndol, or soething that makes you drowsy like codine. Only use it as a last measure though, cause those things can be addictive, and they tend to give you nighmares
