X-Box and PS are both squarly aimed primarily at the middle market...
This is the market where the cash is... though no-one single middle market games-player will ever buy as many games as a single hobbyist gamer...
The number of middle market players is where the money is...
And given the cost of producing a console, and titles capible of competing in todays market the Nintendo wont have enough buyers cash to make this possible...
There may be one more full size console left in Nintendo... but its future is left only as a handheld machine...
(at least until Sony & Microsoft dicede to attak the market)

Explain Sega's Saturn then (and to a lesser extent, Dreamcast) :-)
I think you're forgetting about me, and my power.
I am the young parent. I like games. I care about what my children see.
Therefore I choose Nintendo.
There are games I can enjoy, with the characters I grew up with, and I want my children to get the same joy from them.
Also as a parent, money is a little tight, so why splash out on extras like a DVD player?
The N64 may have earnt Nintendo a whole new user base of fans. They may be young, but, get this, they will get older. And the GameCube has promised some more mature titles to keep them interested in Nintendo.
And there will still be the titles that appeal to the young, so more parents will keep buying Nintendos for their children.
Then, of course, there are the links between the GameCube and the GameBoy Advance.
If used correctly it could add a whole new aspect to some games. Surely many will buy the GameCube + GBA just to see this?

Pokemon base is huge... but as Sony prooved with the PS1... its the 18-35 market thats important...
They have the time, the money and the inclination to enjoy this form of entertainment. They grew up with computer games and so dont consider them just for kids... and they can buy more games than kids since they dont have to worry about saving pocket money, part time job cash, etc...
Equally once the Pokemon crazy does die down... where then do Nintendo go to recoup their cash... I doubt that many Book/Movie companies will make Harry Potter games for the Nintendo alone... ???
But then... they also get all the Pokemon base... and that is a HUGE audience.
And the Harry Potter base... and all other little thingys.

But... the general public views the console as a kiddies Pokemon box
