I found a mobile phone today - same model as my own, a Sony CMD-J70.

It was just sitting on a wall as I walked past. It doesn't have a SIM card in it, so I don't know if it's been nicked or what.

I don't know whether to hand it in to the police or get unlocked and make use of it/flog it.

If I hand it in, I don't think it stands any chance of getting back to the owner - more likely it'll get scrapped or remain unclaimed and some copper will keep it for himself.

Or I can get it unlocked (it's on the dodgy Vodafone network) and either flog it or use it for spare parts... a spare battery would be nice, and save me buying one for £30-40.

Hmm...?

How many times do you have to tell people that story?!

Ooh, that's a bit uncalled for isn't it?

Always handy to have one fully charged spare, in case you have to dash out and don't have time to charge it. :-)

Ah, right. Well, as the phone doesn't work (no SIM), that's okay too! :-)

What about Findus Kippers? I reckon they would stand up in court. Only if they were frozen, though - a bit limp when defrosted.

Hand it in, I had my bag stolen or lost at a night club the other week. Luckily my friend had my phone in HER bag, so I only lost £6! I would still have been grateful if it had been handed in (lucky my friends lent me the money for my taxi home!) I

Why would someone steal a phone and keep just the sim card?

I agree with Snuggly. If you hand it in, you can have a clear conscience. If you keep it, you're a bad little boy.

Fair enough, it doesn't have a SIM card, so who knows if it's already been stolen or whatever, but still. Imagine if it was YOUR phone!

And think about this - what if somebody was mugged for that phone. Won't do you any good if you're found with a phone somebody was stabbed for, eh? Eh? Eh? I rest my case.

Whether or not I'd keep it is a totally different story though...
