So who out there has brought a hd dvd or bluray player?
Which do you think will win the war?
Which has the best movies?
Will Sony idea of putting bluray into PS3 have an impact?

as far as im concerned i think im gona wait before i purchase a player, i love to watch hd content but dont want to waste money on a machine that may soon become obsolete.

i looked at a few sales figures and in the uk and hd-dvd seems to be out selling blu-ray, but its a different story in the usa.

sony putting a bluray in ps3 seems a sensible idea, if microsoft had put hd dvd into the 360 at launch this war would proberbly not be happening as hd dvd would of had a massive head start time wise, but as standalone players come down in price the fact the ps3 has a built in player will become irrelevant. hd dvd players are cheaper at the moment with bluray costing around £100 more for the cheaper units on the market

hd-dvd is cheaper to produce but blu-ray seems to be the better technology, its is capable of storing 25gb of data on a single layer with a theoretical space for upto 8 layers, thats 200gb of storage. this has not yet been achieved but sont think it is possible, as for hd-dvd it stores 15gb per layer as is theoretically capable of holding 4 layers which is a maximum of 60gb, which is plenty for now

i would like to see blu-ray win, with its thin layers and larger capacity but not using it now, the lower storage of hd-dvd may become and issue a start a new format war so i would rather skip that and go for the better tech now, but from my past experience its not the better format that wins, its the cheaper (vhs over betamax, dvd-r over dvd+r).

so what do you people think????

They should fight it out properly.

Something like playground conkers should sort it.

Yep, Bay did write something on his blog which he later retracted, but now he's pretty much come out and said what he thinks.

Oh he was the one who did the Transformers movie? Was that originally on HD-DVD but he wanted it on Blu-ray? Yeah I read a lot of comments from people saying he'd be happy.

I read some more articles lately, one about the Porn industry going with Blu-ray now. Though from what I have read and what Garin has said, porn isnt really a big deciding factor in the format war and that porn was sold on both formats anyway.

Bay's Blu-Ray support has been an interesting one, having to back down so that he could make Transformers 2 but then becoming a bit more active again after the recent news of Warner moving over to one format.

If big names in the industry are going to shout about it, then HD-DVD doesn't really stand much of a chance of seeing 2008 out.

Michael Bay says:

"Microsoft wants both formats to fail so they can be heroes and make the world move to digital downloads. That is the dirty secret no one is talking about. That is why Microsoft is handing out $100 million dollar checks to studios just embrace the HD DVD and not the leading, and superior Blu Ray. They want confusion in the market until they perfect the digital downloads. Time will tell and you will see the truth."

I guess that would be one of the things they would want to avoid. I think they probably wont, the fact that the 360 doesnt have HD-DVD says a lot. Was it just to keep costs down or did they not want to commit to either. Atleast this way the consumer can decide.

Just checked on ebay, there's a lot of HD-DVD Xbox players for sale. Amazon are selling them for £99.98 but you can pick one up for £62. Or is 38% cheaper normal on ebay, I have no idea. :)

Universal HD DVD exclusivity contract has expired, sits non-renewed

Here's some more news, so it seems both Studios are able to leave whenever they want now. Unfortunately I dont think they'll make an announcement for another few weeks.

Well I hope that doesn't happen (RE: dig in), to be honest I havent really studied both formats. From what people have been arguing, Blu-ray holds more and has regions while HD-DVD is cheaper and has no regions. Seems odd that Blu-ray seem to be the consumer choice because I thought they would prefer something cheaper and without regions and of course the studios would want the one with regions. I don't really mind as I'm sure there will be region free players eventually.

Entirely. It's all just connected via USB anyway and the Xbox dashboard can be updated by a disc sold with the machine, as it currently is with the HD-DVD drive. The question is, though, if they do decide to do this, would they provide some compensation for current HD-DVD owners should HD fail (like money off the Blu-ray player if you own an HD-DVD for the 360 perhaps)?

excellent. In which case, toshiba and sony you may continue killing each other whilst i worship the winner. Just don't cause a global depression, start wars, genocide or mass sucide.

Not really. Where as the Apple brand is quite strong, in terms of the home computer market they're still pretty small. So they dont have the capability to tip the balance in any measure I think.

> Do you think it'll end within the year Garin?

Your guess is as good as mine really. I think what happens will depend upon whether they are offered or can think of a decent exit strategy. The Blu-Ray Association have already been making noises about a possible deal. And as you've already noted, Samsung have suggest they concentrate on the PC market (where different formats seem to co-exist more easily). Then again its entirely possible they'll dig in if they dont see any way out.
