Okay, well forget the head start and consider this one...

People know what each machine can do, what software is out, and what software is coming. Yet the PS2 still outsells Xbox considerably. So not only did it have a massive head start, but the gap is actually growing. So if it's not to do with quality, what is it?

There's no doubting that Xbox is technically superior. With a 2-year technological advantage over PS2, I'd be extremely concerned if it didn't. But know your hardware and you'll know that the advantage isn't as great a first look at specs seem to suggest.

There's also an unnerving reliance on pretty graphics in many of these arguments. I wonder if gameplay actually matters any more, or if people are too busy admiring fancy lighting effects to notice that - just maybe - the gameplay sucks.

And again, for those with short memories... I have all three of the systems, and the only one I couldn't do without is my PS2.

Yes I do, and you'd have to be extremely fussy to notice it. It's like normal sound, and surround sound - it just isn't worth the bother.

No. Have you seen the graphics on the likes of GT3?

Well EXCUSE ME for stating fact. The X-Box and PS2 may have differences, but I am yet to pick up an X-Box game and think 'Wow! This completely eliminates all PS2 graphics!' because it won't happen. It's hardly the difference you noticed with, say, the PSOne and N64.

While the GC and X-Box are about the same, with the PS2 behind, it's only a very small margin. Look at what games like GT3 have done, and compare it to current games on X-Box. I haven't seen anything to better it. And if it does, who cares? It's only a minimal difference anyway, and it's a real shame some people can't accept that.

Urgh.

Xbox has excellent games, Excellent graphics, Excellent potential, XboxLIVE and the controller S.

PS2 has Relativly good games, Average Graphics.

Depends on personal taste, I say forget the console war (PS2 vs Xbox) and just go out and buy an Xbox :P

Oh come on, you don't honestly believe the PS2 is that close to the X-Box surely. Have you seen the graphics on the likes of Halo 2 ? You'd have to be pretty clueless to not see the difference. DOA Extreme Beach Volleyball is another superb use of the X-Box's graphical power, not to mention Panzer Dragoon Orta, Splinter Cell and Steel Battalion. The PS2 couldn't come close to reproducing these kinds of visuals - even the GC would struggle with a number of them.

***A Game***

The ps2's got about 30 other 'reasons' to make it the 'gamers choice'.

Considerable? Hardly. Just take a look at games like Metal Gear Solid 2 and GT3. They easily match anything I've seen on X-Box, if not better. The X-Box will ultimately out-do the PS2, but it'll be so marginal, it won't be a factor.

Is the head start relevant to the buyer? Sure, it might be in console wars, but when you're looking to buy a console, whether one has an unfair advantage or not doesn't matter at all, it makes it more worthwhile.

Well, it's all about games really. Online play isn't very important. I doubt 50%, if not 25% of gamers will utilise it, so it all comes down to the potential of the games. In this area, with it's developers and user base, I think you'll agree the PS2 wins hands down.

It's a matter of opinion, and in mine, any gamer shouldn't be without a PS2. X-Box, on the other hand, I can live without.
