Red Bull ran into reliability problems as Verstappen lost engine power, but he was still ahead of his team mate Riccardio.
Practice 3 is at 10am tomorrow and it will be interesting to see if Ferrari can keep up their superior pace.
More engine woes for McLaren as Vandoorne takes a 15 place grid penalty for exceeding engine parts, even though we're only on the 4th race of the season.
Not that it'll matter much to McLaren seeing as they're hardly competitive this season.
Verstappen was the lead Red Bull in 4th, with Ricciardo in 6th.
Second practice is currently underway.
And the whole issue of team orders at Mercedes has reared it's head again - although what "special circumstances" means is anyone's guess.
Still concerned about Honda for McLaren. I really think they should look to another engine supplier as soon as possible, Honda have been breaking so many of their promises.
All credit to Bottas in his first start on pole for maintaining his position, unfortunately Vettel managed to get ahead of Hamilton and him and Bottas pulled away at the start of the race.
In a totally stupid move when the safety car came out Hamilton deliberately held up Riccardo coming into the pits as Bottas was already in there and copped a 5 second penalty which may have cost him the race.
I thought during the last 10 laps or so Hamilton was going to catch Vettel, taking a good second out of his lead each lap, but it wasn't to be.
Vettel now takes a 7 point lead in the championship and the next race is in 2 weeks time in Russia.
The Mercedes were by far the better cars on the day, being nearly half a second ahead of the rest.
It will be interesting to see how Bottas reacts to the start, this being his first pole position, and if Hamilton or even Vettel in third can take advantage of his inexperience to get past him.
While it will be expected that either Vettel or Hamilton will be on pole I wouldn't be surprised if we have one of the other drivers on pole, or certainly on the front row of the grid.
There have been a number of breakdowns in the searing heat in Bahrain, with Vettel suffering an electrical fault that caused his car to completely shut down, and Vandoorne and Sainz breaking down as well.
Red Bull are looking strong, and Hulkenberg is under investigation from the stewards after causing Hamilton to swerve out of his way after he slowed down.
P3 is tomorrow at 1pm with qualifying at 4pm.
