I have two suggestions:
1. Train the armed forces to use up to date fire-fighting equipment and make it illegal for anybody to prevent the use of such equipment.
2. As Firemen have nothing to do except play darts for half their time, why not give them some more work. They could be the town watchers, pouring over cctv monitors to watch for traffic jams, fires and rowdy elements of society, and simply reporting events to the Police as necessary. That could be worth 5% on their pay. Of course they might have to be banned from doing second jobs during the day if they have to stay awake all night watching monitors.
These are exceptionally good and logical ideas. Maybe I should be a Governement adviser.

Maybe, just maybe, they only want - say, 15-20. But they know that if they ask for 20, they'd only get 10.
So they're asking for 40, knowing that they won't get it, and will be bargained down.
Any one thought of that?
Thought not.

They deserve a payrise they save countless lives every year
---------
The Police save more lives and put themselves in the face of direct combat with other people.
Regardless of how much they get now, do they deserve a 40% pay rise also?
The police MAY sometimes get to the seen of a fire first but what can they do? They have no equipment to go in.
-----
That's what I said before. The Police sometimes have to go in to these places (when the Firemen aren't there yet), WITHOUT the aid of breathing apperatus.
Recently a Fireman died in Leicester trying to rescue someone from a tallish building and he fell from the top and died instantly, there were a lot of people watchhing him that day including several police men, but they did nothing.
-----
What could they do to a man who fell and died instantly?
£17k starting pay for leaving a life behind with 2 small children and a young wife is peanuts.
-----
You can't really say that. That's like saying that the Window-Cleaners who clean Canary Wharf, etc, deserve more than 14k (example), because they'll be leaving behind a loving family, with 3 kids, etc, if they fall.
Same applies to many other jobs.
> window cleaners are just as at risk as firemen walking rooftops. Would
> you have them earn ludicrous amounts of money also?
Meh, when have you seen window cleaners enter tall buildings with blazing fires from rooftops to save people?

My question marks were meant to indicate "what on earth are you talking about", not questioning sentence structure.
Ease down a notch, frothy.
>but it's the police who get to the scene of a fire
So when there's a fire what do you do - call the police? oh of course, they will radio for the fire to disappear and it magically will? Heh the police MAY sometimes get to the seen of a fire first but what can they do? they have no equipment to go in. Recently a Fireman died in Leicester trying to rescue someone from a tallish building and he fell from the top and died instantly, there were a lot of people watchhing him that day including several police men, but they did nothing. £17k starting pay for leaving a life behind with 2 small children and a young wife is peanuts.
