Fact: It's not difficult to recruit Firemen. If they were given a big pay rise then that would be a cue for everybody else too. Taxes would rise dramatically and the economy would melt down. We would all be worse off.

I have two suggestions:

1. Train the armed forces to use up to date fire-fighting equipment and make it illegal for anybody to prevent the use of such equipment.

2. As Firemen have nothing to do except play darts for half their time, why not give them some more work. They could be the town watchers, pouring over cctv monitors to watch for traffic jams, fires and rowdy elements of society, and simply reporting events to the Police as necessary. That could be worth 5% on their pay. Of course they might have to be banned from doing second jobs during the day if they have to stay awake all night watching monitors.

These are exceptionally good and logical ideas. Maybe I should be a Governement adviser.

excuse me, but theirs is NOT the most dangerous job, that more than likely goes to the police. And don't discount the NHS, throwing themselves in the face of infection every day.

Gilchrist said he will not prevent The Army from using the appliances, but highlighted "the dangers" of novices using specialist equipment.

I don't have a problem with the firefighters striking.

They do the most dangerous job of all our publice services, and should be paid accordingly. They also cannot do overtime, which impedes on them at times like hristmas when everyone else is doing it to get a few extra quid to buy presents.

I think about £23,000 a year is acceptable.

However I do have a major problem about how they are doing it, preventing Public assests from being used. They should let the army use the red fire -engines, they are the publics after all.

Sounds to me like someone wants mo' money without having to stand in a bunch of fire.
I'll gladly hand over my taxes to anyone willing to risk their life for me and my family.
If you work in an office and use a computer and your main danger is eye-strain? Pah

Said it before and nobody replied:
The worst thing about this whole business is Labour pretending like they're outraged. Can somebody please remind them of "The Winter of Discontent" of the late 70's, under Labour where we had 3-day weeks and most of the services were on strike.
Labour, Socialist Party? Dont make me laugh.
The last time the Fire Service striked was in the 70s, under Labour. Blair/Prescott seem to have forgotten that is was Labour's staunch support of Union Actions that cost them the election and resulted in a Tory landslide. Scargill/Miner's strike/Liverpool dockers.
Labour used to be in favour of strike action, so why now have they started bleating about it?

Good for the firefighter - yes, they do a brilliant job.

But so do lots of other people and they must come under the same or similar remuneration and gradings as others.

Well actually it's my name.... sort of. I suppose it should really be Thony, as my real name is Anthony.

I'm not telling you my surname as I want to remain anonymous.

Hmmm, I think you've totally missed the point with this on. I was say that if you start talks with a figure you *want*, you will invariably be beaten down and end up with much less than your bottom-line. If you start higher than your bottom line, then you have a much greater chance of getting what you want through negotiation talks. If the government would realise the value of the fire service this action could have been avoided. However, Mr. Blair appears to be far more interested in other worldwide events and trying to become a self-styled ‘European President’!

Oh and as for the relatives of a fire victim, I have nothing but sympathy for anyone else involved in such a horrible event – a terrible business and no mistake! And I’m sure if you ask anyone who has ever needed the fire service, they will tell you they do a fantastic and *priceless* job.

However, *YOU* on the other hand seem to think they sit around playing darts all day! Trying tell *that* to someone who has had their life saved by a fire fighter and see what you get!

Hmmm, yes I supposed this is a debate - although *sensible* is stretching it a bit. It's quite unfortunate that it was started by a post that was grossly misinformed and completely opinionated. However, as I said earlier, I strongly suspect this was totally intention. Oh and fair enough, from now on it's Tony ;-)

Can you 'stand up' in the middle of an *Internet* chat forum debate? Hmm!
A 'personal attack'? I have no idea what you are talking about! Why on earth would I want to personally attack anyone, least of all you or anyone else at SR? I love the place. However, just because you are 'who you are' does not put you above being picked up for what was a rather inappropriate post. If anyone else had posted the same thing, I would have posted the same response. There was nothing personal about it. There never will be.

The 'keyword' comment? That was simply meant as a joke, a bit of banter you could say. Although it was also intended as a piece of friendly advice to a company who I still want to see do well. What you choose to *do* with that advice is not my concern - all I can do is offer it.

Peace.

Tell that to the relatives of a fire victim.

This is a debate, and my name is tonty or tony. I suggest that you don't stand up in the middle of sensible debate and mouth off a personal attack.
