Fact: It's not difficult to recruit Firemen. If they were given a big pay rise then that would be a cue for everybody else too. Taxes would rise dramatically and the economy would melt down. We would all be worse off.

I have two suggestions:

1. Train the armed forces to use up to date fire-fighting equipment and make it illegal for anybody to prevent the use of such equipment.

2. As Firemen have nothing to do except play darts for half their time, why not give them some more work. They could be the town watchers, pouring over cctv monitors to watch for traffic jams, fires and rowdy elements of society, and simply reporting events to the Police as necessary. That could be worth 5% on their pay. Of course they might have to be banned from doing second jobs during the day if they have to stay awake all night watching monitors.

These are exceptionally good and logical ideas. Maybe I should be a Governement adviser.

Yeah but Tony, they might spend half their time playing darts but they spend the other half saving lifes, and that alone is worth a pay rise.

I think they should go on strike! The goverment are all jammy b****rds so... LET'S STRIKE!

And the guys who work in slaughter houses so that you can have meat on the table. All those live cattle wandering around, then they are dead and have to be gutted and cut up.

They must deserve a rise too.

I say give Lollipop ladies 30k a year. They could get run over you know - and think of all the kiddies lives they could be saving!

They may only need to stand in the road in fluorescent clothing for a couple hours a day, but if they save just one life I think they deserve that pay rise.

a) I don't watch London's Burning

b) Just because Train Drivers get paid too much, it doesn't mean that Fire Fighters should too.

c) Many people in many walks of life face danger. e.g. van drivers

In case you missed the news... a fire crew abandoned their picket tonight to go to a fire where life was threatened. And should there be major incidents, they are all ready to attend.

I think Prince andrew would be too aroused by the uniform to do his job properly.
