We don't know, but the big cheese's in the gaming industry do and this includes Microsoft. Microsoft have been told by Rare or just have suspecions of Nintendo's marketing plans and Microsoft stated that they are very cunning and that they have something incredible up the sleeves.
Rumours surrounding online play through the newley announced GBA player add on to the Gamecube could well be it. Online GBA games? Addictive and fun games that require very little bandwidth etc... or nintendo maintance? It could be terrifyingly possible and may kill X-box off in Japan that hopes X-box Live could help increase dwindeling sales in the land of the rising sun.
Thought you aught to know.
Many of the games are also better to play on the PC so Dringo does have a point. Online gaming is NOT ready yet, not matter what people say.
Also, I hate that stupid comment I read down this topic 'XBox sales are beating GC hands down'. Where as a matter of fact thats what Microsoft are claiming and the truth by an independent board shows that the GameCube is still outselling the XBox in Europe, America and Japan.
Meh, I just hate people who don't know facts. All of you.
Enjoy your games, and shut up.
MS would know because they recently bought out Rare.
It turns out that Rare were develloping a HUGE online RPG for the Gamecube. It's being ported to the Xbox now, but it does show that Nintendo are up to something in the online department...
Nintendo have released both modem and broadband adaptors in Japan and in the US, with only Phantasy Star Online available to play at the moment.
Apparently that was enough to drain US stores of their short supply of broadband adaptors.
Anyway, there's no way that Gamecube Online could be as big or as well thought out and built as Xbox live - MS specialise in networking and have LOADS of experience in this area - the msn gaming zone has been running for years! BUT, if Nintendo do go online, I've no doubt they'll back it up with some incredible games.
They won't make First Person shooters to rival Halo 2 and Unreal Championship, but more likely come out with something insanely clever and original.
Which one's better matters little to me.
They're both going to be great in their own ways and I ought to be getting both, unless my parents refuse to shell out for broadband and I end up with neither! :-(
Bearing in mind that to go online with the GC you'll have to buy an add-on, I really don't think that Nintendo can challenge MS in any way shape or form.
Add-ons are notorious for selling badly. In fact every single add-on for a console has done crap. Even the modem / HDD add-on for the PS2 isn't doing too well in Japan.
Face it, Dringo has no idea what he's talking about and is a biased fanboy.
The fact is that MS are in the best position to make the most out of online gaming at the moment. No add-on is needed to play so ALL gamers will be able to go online if they've got broadband.
The games will all support the voice communicator, everyone will be using broadband, so that will make it easier for developers. The games are on their way as well, with titles like Unreal Championship, Mech Assault and Ghost Recon already out in the US, with HUGE titles like Star Wars:KOTOR, Halo 2 and PGR2 all due next year.
Face it, MS are leading the way when it comes to online console gaming. It WILL take off in the US, as they already have the installed user base of consoles, and readily available broadband.
It WILL take off in Japan. 37 Live titles, by Japanese developers, will be available within 6 months of Live launching. The only place it may not take off is the UK, because BT are crap. And that's not MS's fault.
Ninty fanboy has no clue of Nintendo online plans but convinced they are superior based on the fact it is Nintendo, and that his insecurity with his console means he must convince others of it's superiority"
The original title was shorter, but this one is more accurate.
Without wanting to seem all 'Console Wars' Nintendo have not announced definite online plans, the only public hints are in the GC launch promo books and they just say there will be an adaptor released. I'd suggest that, as Rare have long since known about MS going for them, and indeed invited it, that Rare know very little of these non existent plans. An oxymoron if ever there was one.
Also, those "quotes" from Microsoft ? You're seriously telling me that MS have breached all Nintendo's security, and know these plans that nobody except, as claimed by the original poster, Nintendo know, and MS are just sitting on this info which, if released, could damage Nintendo ? Yeah right.
Exact webpage for these quotes, please.
I won't be holding my breath :P

The Xbox live will have the stronger, more reliable and swifter service combined with solid games.
But when Nintendo go online, they're going to do something special compared to the Xbox's standard line up, but naturally the service won't be as well run.
I think that Xbox live will be best in most cases - with the solid service, but there's going to be one or two essential GC online games/features that'll bring an experience that Xbox live can't hope to touch...
It's a sort of Pikmin Vs Halo scenario.
Halo sort of wins overal, but Pikmin was a far more special game.
*Runs off giggling into the distance*
You will have to do better than that to even begin to compete with Xbox Live...

If that did indeed happen with Nintendo, still you can't compare the games on GBA with Xbox. I'm not concerned about the Japan market to much and the Xbox figures are increasing most other places and beating the GC hands down.
Seeing as you have mentioned it though. GBA would be good online, but you can't compare the two systems. Even then the Xbox games are much more fun online then any GBA game would be for many factors which I am to tired to mention now :) I'm sure some other peeps will fill you in on the joys of Xbox Live! ;)
