Well, assuming you want to play this game, and you already have PS2, you HAVE to buy the following:
GAME
MODEM
HARD DRIVE
KEYBOARD
SUBSCRIPTION to PlayOnline.
How many people outside Japan perhaps will bother. I was slightly annoyed I have to buy an expansion pack for some 64 game, but this game's requirments are obscene!

I don't think it is as big a problem as you are making out. Sony looks like agreeing deals that will mean any internet connection will work, for analogue anyway. Telwest are still doing the broadband trials but I don't think many of us have broadband yet ? Saying you have to buy hte game is rather a mute point, is it a disadvantage that you have to buy HALO on the X-Box to play it ? No. The modem and HDD are going to cost about £150 total, but will work with other games as well, therefore they are not solely needed for Final Fantasy XI. Its fair to say that a keyboard, costing about £20-£30 will be a must buy for any modem owner anyway.
When you consider the Playstation 2's low price compared to X Box then its not that bad really. Just to get an X Box that plays DVDs is going to cost nearly £330 alone ! Also a keyboard will be needed for any online use anyway. Using the reasoning you have used any X Box game costs £130 more to play than a Playstation 2 one so every game is doomed to fail ! Not... :)
No one ever said console gaming was cheap, and Final Fantasy XI will be worth every penny, the import versions of X are breath taking.
Oh, sorry. I think most people will end up getting the modem and HDD anyway at some stage...depends how well all the new online features go. Such as downloadable episodes to games etc. Might as well get it sooner before people want them, and then they're sold out. But then again, it might completely flop, so who knows what to do anymore...

Idiots!
like what? They usually give ninty games great marks, like 8 out of 10... if you think that's bad, you just don't understand their scoring system...
10/10 is PERFECTION in todays gaming. Only 4 games have got this
9/10 is MUST HAVE worthy of being a classic.
...
5/10 is AVERAGE- not bad, not great.

> edge magazine hates the ps2
this is pure rubbish... only people who can't open their eyes and realise that the PS2 ISN'T actually perfect, and that there were far more problems with it then there should have been say this.

I'm talking about in Japan... whether you need a subscription outside Japan is still in doubt.
However, you DO need all the other things- Modem, HDD, Keyboard and the game. Check out the previews in EDGE and elsewhere.
