Example - "The PS2 is the best console of the next generation"
"No it isn't, it has the worst technology and some aspects are quite flawed."
"Yeah, but it has better games."
"Name some."
"SSX Tricky, Tony Hawks 3..."
"On GC and Xbox, on GC and Xbox..."
"But the GameCube and Xbox don't have good games"
"Halo, Smash Bros., Unreal Championship, Star Wars Rogue Leader..."
"But the PS2 is best."
Oh dear. It seems that people get into the wrong frame of mind. "PS2 is best, and nothing else is good". Definitely the wrong frame of mind. In the next-gen console race, Nintendo has got a great console which isn't held back by complicated architecture, high costs and obsessive anti-aliasing, and the Xbox is everything the PS2 is with that expensive Microsoft upgrade. Looks like this is one race that Sony can't win...
Or can they? Despite being less of a console than the others, Sony have such a massive fan base, and such a massive head start on the competition, that it may just end up to be like the previous console race.
The PlayStation was the technologically inferior console, yet by having such a massive base of cheap, fun games, became a massively popular hit. The N64 had much greater visuals, but because of that unjustified and biased view that Nintendo is 'just for kids', sold appallingly, coupled with the extreme prices. £65 for an N64 game anyone? Nah, everyone with both consoles will go for 2 PlayStation games anyday.
However, the Dreamcast was really good, and had all the qualities that made the PlayStation great. However, it arrived 4 years too late, and by this time Sony had established its multi-million fan base and had managed to dissuade all potential consumers away from Sega's really nice machine. Result? We all know it.
(PS. Now is the time to snap up a cheap Dreamcast. £70 for a DC and 2 games? Ridiculously cheap. Buy now!)
And it is entirely possible that the same will happen to Nintendo and Microsoft if they don't pull their act together. The PlayStation 2 was, and still is, a much, MUCH broadcasted console. Ask an adult in a shopping mall, and chances are that they have heard of the PS2, if not actually have one in their home. It is totally the opposite in the case of Nintendo and the GameCube. Some people know of the Xbox, but the GameCube? Nope.
A wise move by Nintendo was to advertise the GameCube on the back of the GameBoy Advance box. A+ for Nintendo, as the GBA is one of the fastest selling consoles ever. In fact, if it wasn't for the GameBoy, Pocket and Colour, Nintendo would probably be sharing its grave with Sega.
What is wrong with all of this, is that Sony don't deserve the staggering profits they make. They don't have any good in-house games, and put ridiculous prices on add-ons. Nintendo, while infamous for delays, make great games, with a passion, and always deliver something fun, innovative and truly great. Microsoft have got the heart for the console business. True, in essence they are only in it for the money, but even so, they have got all the backing needed to keep a hydroelectic dam stable, and trust me, thats a lot.
My last point to make, is that Sony does need to pull its act together. There are a very small amount of great games around on the PS2, no true must-haves, whereas the competition have must-have titles available from day 1. Many of the PS2's games are not PS2-only, and exclusive is the wrong word to describe it.
Exclusive = first, not, as many people are fooled by false advertising, 'only on that console'.
The PlayStation 2 is a great console for variety and price.
The GameCube is a great console for quality and price.
The Xbox is a great console for variety and quality.
From every angle, it is a win-win situation, yet many-a-person go for the PS2, merely because of advertisement. For the next-gen race, public awareness is everything. This isn't meant as a rip on the PS2, but it is just showing how Sony has played its cards right up until now, and how not to play the gaming game.
My advice to everyone wanting a new console:
Buy everything. That way you'll have a non-biased view, and can experience all great things gaming.
Remember: You only dis what you don't have. The DC is great, albeit with a massive anti-DC following.
Go on, its gaming, and gaming is great. Have fun with your next gen consoles, and do a little research into what you're buying. Don't fall under the rock-slide of Sony advertising, buy what YOU want, not what they do.
Have fun...
COOL! STUFF!

The Army of the Free Gamer points out that anyone can be a winner if they make friends with others that have a different console. A games shop owner would be even better.
So, Tony, how's it goin? ;-)
Can't you realise that the PS2 is bringing out some superb games at the moment!?
SSX Tricky: out on X-box and Gamecube
THPS3: Out on X-box and Gamecube
Half Life: this game is how old?
GTA3: Coming for X-box
Jak and Daxter: Good introduction to PS2 owners, doesnt have the same flair as a Rare Platformer though. Humour doesnt have the same touch
Max Payne: Better version on X-box
Castle Wolfenstein: Coming to X-box too
Agent Under Fire:Multi-formet
Starfighter 2: Special edition coming out for X-box
Conclusion: All consoles have thier strong points. The only winner is the person with all 3 consoles...
In war you can be blinded by the bombshell, but rest a minute and see that there can be as much wisdom on joining forces. Use your conjunctive powers to bring good gaming to the world and help each other to experience the goodness of all gaming continents.
Share your favorite technology with others and let them share theirs with you, only then will you find peace of mind when you don't wish to be on all sides of the console divide.
> Well, from the list of GC games you've put, hardly any of them are must have
> games for me.
Same here. Out of the launch games only..errmmm.. actually no game is one that I would like. They maybe good, but there not must have titles. I first thought Luigi Manison looked good, but after reading a few reviews it doesnt seem to be as good. It will probably be fun, but nothing like Mario 64 was on the N64.
Wave race looks pretty good and would probably be a game that I would buy, but its not on my list of must have games. Sonic Battle looks ok and would be another game on my list of maybes.
The other third party games I already have or are PS2 conversion. I have Crazy Taxi, THPS3. The sports games wouldnt interest me.
Resident Evil is a MUST have game for me. Also Super smash brothers looks ok, but I never really played the first. Pikmin may interest me, once its out and I can see it. Other games like Starfox advertures looks good and also kameo.
Everybody is saying how rubbish PS2 games are and how great Nintendo games are. But its down to personal preference. I like the PS2 as it has some great games like MGS2, GTA3, DMC, GT3, Tekken 4 e.t.c But I also like the X-Box and will get a GC because of the Resident Evil games. Also I know that Nintendo do make some amazing games, and there are a few games coming out for the GC that I want to play.
And to be honest, I don't care that much if a lot of the games are on other consoles/PC. The ones on GC and X-Box I will probably have completed by the time they're even released, and although some of my PS2 games I listed aren't out yet, a lot of the GC and X-Box games you listed aren't launch titles, so it goes both ways.
And on the subject of saying MGS2 is just a normal 3rd person shooter, I really do have to disagree. What made MGS special was the amazing plot and characters. It's the most emotional game I've ever played, and there are some absolute classic moments in the FMV scenes. Like when Snake kills Sniper Wolf, and the wolves howl, music becomes high and Otacon screams-I can't describe how I felt in words, I knew it was only a game, but it was better than some films could ever have offered!
But hey, my fingers hurt now, so I'm gonna finish with the statement that they all rule. GC for you, PS2 for me, and X-Box maybe for you and for people like Goatboy. I'd prefer an X-Box to a GC because it offers my style of games, where as the GC just isn't for me. We had an N64 on holiday with about 10 games, and I hardly played it.
And Smackdown 3 ain't crap, it's just disappointing. The best wrestling game out there, but not as good as it could've been.

Actually, you're right. But only 2 will be out first on the PS2, most are Xbox exclusive, in the proper sense of the word, the PS2 version comes later. I think. :|
Happy? The GC and Xbox aren't out here yet, pillock...
