Production of the PlayStation 2 reached the 50 million unit mark after 2 years and 10 months from its initial debut; 1 year and 2 months faster than it took the original PlayStation console to get to the same point, said SCEI. It also comes just 4 months after PlayStation 2 production passed the 40 million unit mark—this quick jump being helped by record sales of the console over the holiday period.

SCEI said it sold a total of 8.5 million PlayStation 2 consoles during November and December, a jump of 24 percent on the previous year. Of those sales, 4 million were in the North American market, 3.4 million were in the European market and 940,000 units were in the Japanese market. End of year domestic sales were down 27 percent; however, those in North America and Europe were up 42 percent and 27 percent respectively.

Along with the console there are also more than 1,500 software titles available, production of which has passed 300 million units, said SCEI.

My GameCube fell off the shelf the other day and landed on a wooden floor the other day, and both the console and the game inside it were perfectly fine.

I also did this a while ago with my PS2, and my copy of ToCA Race Driver which was inside the PS2 at the time, unfortnately snapped, and my console has very probably been damaged too.

I seem to drop my consoles a lot. If I had an X-Box I'd have a large hole in my floor.

No if it was a boxing match it would mean there would be more supporters for Sony but as Nintendo and Microsoft have far more AAA titles than Sony, it would be sony that lose.

Oh and who is putting money on next Christmas the sales being:

1: GTA5
2: FIFA 2004
3: James Bond
4: Harry Potter
5: Final Fantasy

etc...

What are you trying to prove Top Score? The PS2 is better because it sold more?

Yep Sony have hit the same rut as they did in the last generation.

Sheesh! He's gone right anti PS2 lately.

First slating the PS2 as awkward to devellop for.
Ok, so pretty much everyone has, but this guy took it MUCH further than everyone else.

He described Kingdom Hearts as "The sort of rubbish that he's come to expect of the Playstation"...

It seems you were right Wookiee, Nintendo have bought the guy...

It's more like an F1 race where the Pole Position car gets a 40 lap head start.
