I asked a friend today if he'll be getting a PS2 for Christmas, he said "Yeah, I'll pay £299 for it, and I'll play all my old games."
"Err, Why?"
"Because I'll probably use it more for playing DVDs"
This is from someone elses mouth, not mine.
This should have read:
I for one am more likely to believe an article in an official mag quoting official figures, THAN a passing comment posted by someone constantly posting anti-PS2 messages on a message board
Official PSM, issue 63, page 21 - "Otaku Youth" column:
"Five months since its launch PlayStation 2's scoring some serious sales in Japan. Latest reports are that the new console's currently resident in a whopping 3.5 million Japanese homes. To put this into perspective, PlayStation 2 is being swiped from the shelves at four times the rate of PS1 at the same stage in its life cycle.
Obviously this has caused a few technical problems as the factories are churning flat out 24 hours a day just trying to keep up with demand. But the most interesting statistic is that 30% of people buying the console did not previously own a PlayStation. Is the hardcore gaming Otaku a dying breed? Or are we witnessing the true acceptance of gaming into mainstream culture? Let's hope so. There are a massive 400 PS2 games currently in development, so there'll be plenty for people to batter their fingers with. Indeed, Sony estimates that will have sold 100 million PlayStations by next year."
Now... yes, it's from an official, dedicated magazine - but you cannot falsify such figures. You'd be jumped on by any number or organisations; you have to have proof of such figures.
This certainly wouldn't seem to indicate that PS2 was dying. In addition, the very reason that Sony have implemented a pre-order system in the UK is that they can't satisfy the full demand here because of the demand in Japan, and they are determined to satisfy at least one market. I don't blame them for choosing their home market.
Even if these people are buying PS2 for the DVD capability (DVD has by all accounts really taken off in Japan since PS2's launch), the machines are still being bought and adding to the installed user-base.
Also, would that many people buy PS2 as a DVD player if the quality was not at least above average? Especially if they can buy better, standalone units for less money.
If PS1 rose to dominate the scene, and PS2 is selling four times more units, PS2 can hardly be classed as 'dying'.
If you do "know" otherwise, please state the source for the rest of us to check up on. After all, I'm sure we all want to know what we're buying into! :-)

I read all I can about PS2, simply because I want to find out all I can about what I'm buying; I have read nothing *anywhere* (official mags, unofficial mags, dedicated mags, multi-format mags, Daily Radar (I've started going back occasionally), GameSpot, and more...) to suggest that PS2 is in any kind of trouble.
Sure, not all of the games are astounding, and the DVD quality is not the absolute best, but so far you've told us nothing we didn't already know.
None of your claims about PS2 so far have been backed by hard evidence, all have appeared to be based on nothing more than personal opinion, and on at least two occasions, your claims have simply been wrong (PS2 polygon count, DVD capacity), when anyone can look up the hard facts on the web.
You even originally claimed to have played GT2000 from start to finish when the only existing in demo form, featuring one car on the Seattle track!
Don't get me wrong, if there are problems, I want to know about them. Yes, I have read negative things about PS2, but nothing so far that would prevent me buying a PS2. So please, if you have genuine information, post the source; but make sure it's genuine fact and not simply pro-Sega/Nintendo rumours, ramblings and rants. I'm not really interested in Console Wars and who has the better machine.
I've made my choice, I'm sticking with it, and all I want is *facts* - good or bad. As yet, I've seen no evidence of real problems, or anything drastically wrong with the machine, and it would seem no-one else has either.
As I understand it, Sony, Sega, Nintendo etc. make little profit on the consoles themselves, and get revenue from developers; to publish a game on a console, you pay a royalty that consle's manufacturer, and that's where they get their money from.
I would rather pay a higher initial price for the console and have royalty-free - and therefore cheaper - software, just like the PC.
