So, not only has Nintendo got to compete with Sony (again!), but this time Microsoft have joined the scene. Add to that, the PS2 has had two Christmases worth of sales, and a huge repetoire of games, and the Xbox has a huge marketting budget (and a strong launch to go).
Clearly, Nintendo cannot compete with Microsoft on the TV screens- they simply don't ahve the money for that.
Oh no... Ninty have a far greater weapon at their disposly- games. And lots of them. With characters and franchises ranging from Mario and Zelda to Metroid and Kirby you wouldn't be suprised if Nintendo launched the Gamecube with the best line up of AAA titles seen...
In fact, I thought Nintendo had gone one better when they announced, a while back, that they had given the rights to many of their games away. Metroid, Smash Brothers and Starfox, amongst others, were to have sequals made by developers outside Nintendo. This would then enable Nintendo to concentrate on making some of the most spectacular games ever. Maybe a new Zelda for launch? Maybe something totally new!
But alas, things seem to be crumbling. First we hear news of Ninty's in house games. It turns out that Mario and Zelda will be absent from launch, to be replaced by a couple of weaker games. Ok, so the in house games are good fun, no doubt, BUT will these attract gamers to buy the Gamcube. Methinks not.
Nor will the news of a new Zelda wet gamers appetites- 90% of gamers are the casual sort who will buy a console on brandname alone, and don't read multiformat mags. How are Nintendo going to get these gamers to part with their PS2s, and buy a console that looks like a kids toy? (Sorry, but the console doesn't look "serious".)
OH! And things get worse!...
Those franchised games Ninty have given out aren't all they were promised to be.
At Spaceworld, there was a big absence of Metroid clips- only 8 seconds of the game were shown. Asked why this was, Mr. Miyamoto had to admit that he'd only got the code for the game just before the show, and he wasn't impressed by what he saw. The game had bad pop-up, no sound, was not interactive, and certainly wasn't worth the months of work that had been spent on it. (I believe the game was 8 months into developent at this time!). In fact, the whole future of the game looked on a knife edge.
The other games Ninty had handed out were all good, but many were so far from ready that you wonder why Nintendo didn't just make one of these games themselves to get it out at launch.
Before Nintendo fans throw a riot, let me just saya few things:
1) I am only talking about launch titles
2) I'm a huge Miyamoto fan and will be buying a GC myself
3) This topic is MEANT to cause discussion.
Oh, and remember, all the titles that miss release will come out eventually. So those Zeldas and Marios will certainly mean the console is a great piece of kit. That;s not what I'm arguing about.
I just want to know where all of Ninty's time has gone? They've given away many of their big games, has ages to make a killer titles, and instead they come out with Pikmin... fun, but not AAA by any means.

I hardly think Sony or Microsoft will be going into the red either.

No they won't but your forgetting not only do Nintendo have the Gameboy they are also a huge games developer...

I hardly think Sony or Microsoft will be going into the red either. In fact, I'd be willing to place a bet that Nintendo is the most financially vunerable of the three, excluding Sega of course.

Erm, what?
But as i have said before a

Ah, but this is happening with the PS2 as well.

And this was, what, 2 years into its life? One game can make a difference but it can't change it all.

EVENTUALLY. May I remind you that millions of PS2 owners are playing on SSX Tricky right now, whereas the GameCube hasn't even been released here yet?

Those that are left that is. The people that matter, the general public, could and already have got bored of waiting to see "what turns up". Many, many people will have got a PS2 this Christmas, and many more will in the months to come.
I'm sorry the PS2 is only 4 or 5 months from

WTF? Which neandethalic moron did you hear this from? May I remind you that the PS2 and GC are equally matched? By your reckoning, the GC is outdated before it's even released! LOL!

I don't think 5million+ people see it that way. The PS2 has barely reached half its prime yet.
> Gamecube's games will be shown to the world when released,
And PS2 games have been showed to the world for 18 months now...

As far as I can see they're doing a pretty porr job of it. The PS2 already rules the playground, to take away its sheer dominance is nearly impossible.

If you ask 100 25 year olds what their console of choice is I bet at least 60% of them will mention a Sony console.
> Finally! Nearly a year on and someone is seeing it my way at last! Hallelujah!
It isn't who will sell the best it is who is the best you see Nintendo have a nice profit coming it theres no fear of loss there.
But as i have said before a few weeks at the release of the system can hardly be held responsible for the next 5 years. Although not as much as Sony people will get the Gamecube. Those people's friends will play on it, one of them might get one, there friends play on it. Whilst people don't know about Resident Evil, SSX and Soul Calibur those BIG PS2 GAMES on the Gamecube they will eventually and combined with Nintendo's own will be enough to push people towards it. I'm sorry the PS2 is only 4 or 5 months from being outdated as although it is supposed to be the system to fight along with the Gamecube and X-box and although it may still sell more it just seems like an older generation.
Gamecube's games will be shown to the world when released, splashing names accross footballers chests and ruling the TV screens isn't enought you need to rule the Playground and with Resident Evil and Silicon Knights and those big PS2 beat 'em ups popping over to the Nintendo house I can tell you that Nintendo won't just be the name on the street around the primary schools but the Secondary and colleges too just you wait.

Oh, just to back TBN up... I have said it so many times already, but...
All the analyst's predictions, INCLUDING Ninty's console sales predictions themselves(!) have indicated that the PS2 with easily outsell the GC. In fact, Ninty have said they aim for a 25% share in the console market (made in a statement to investors).
Sonic
The fact is that the PS2 is the console everyone knows, it has had far more selling time, and it has the bigger user base. Developers have put so much money into PS2 development that few can pull out at this stage... you notice how the few developers jumping ship at this late stage are really big ones like Capcom.
But at the end of the day, it all comes down to what the public buy. Certainly, the GC will do well thanks to it's loyal following of hardcore gamers and younger gamer audience. It will not, however, gain huge sales over the PS2, simply because the PS2 is far better known, has a far stronger brand, and plays DVDs. Whenther it's right or not, it's not the console with the best games that "wins"- it's the one with the most sales... and that often has nothing to do with how good the software is- like the DC for example.
Sonic
Ultimately, what does it even matter anyway? If you are happy to wait for a GameCube then you do that. However, in the mean time, I suggest you see your PS2 for what it is: A bloody good console with some of the best games around at the moment.
