Someone tell me this isn't so, I need a control system I can use or I'll never play it.

Must resist getting involved.
I wrote months ago people would hate its control system. And I was right, however give it a few hours. Just like other bloody games you need to get used to it.
Stop complaining, bloody hell.
It's a bit like riding a bike - I have always used a mouse and keyboard for FPS games (cos they were only on the pc until recently - you know what I mean...) and quite simply that is THE most intuitive and precise control system in existence. Try a Q3 tourney or Unreal Championship with a joypad and you WILL be at the bottom of the scoreboard. I gaurantee it.
But let's move on.
I tried my best with the controls on TS 2 and after about 2-3 days it got a lot better. Difficult to be really precise (circling properly with a joy pad is a joke) but the weapons, a bit of bias in the aiming (autoaim anyone) and you can still have a blast since both players are using a joypad and it kinda levels the play field. Then I tried Metroid.
Oh boy. It was ok up until the first boss (great big plant thingy). I needed to target the sun reflectors, and do you think I could circle, with my gun up, and lock on?? Hell no - each time I let go of the shoulder button the visor drops level, and to make matters worse, unless you were almost under the reflector you couldn't lock on. So what was the alternative? STOP and look around -at which point I'm getting pummelled... aaaaargh. I wanted to kill something. Anywayz long story short I got the bastid by some improvisation.
But then realised it wasn't improvisation. I just did it the way the designers intended and that's when I realised that yes, this game is an FPA (first person adventure). The shooting is important but not THE single most important aspect of the game. Exploration is. So I was willing to forgive. I really enjoy the game but like all FPS fans I really go back to my roots in a firefight and Metroid hinders. Until you realise that systematic targetting and circling (with a lock - you can do it with your eyes closed :oP ) is the way you will try the funky shiznit you pull in the Q3 Arena---and die. Or at least get frustrated. Do it the way it was intended and enjoy the 80% of the game that lends itself well to the conrols.
So where am I going *whispers* oh yeah... we all have to learn something new (ever seen a console player (only) hold a mouse and a use a keyboard?? Fish out of water! :oP).If we wanna play the best games, and in this case it certainly is, it's worth it.
SNUGGLY! SNUGGLY! SOMEONE! SOMETHING! I'M! SLOWLY! DYING!

and so far it pales

That was only to be expected. After all, Halo does require you to press exactly the same buttons and do exactly the same things as every other FPS.
Thankfully you can manage to cope with routine gaming.
Please don't compare Halo to Metroid Prime, they are on completly different wave lengths and levels.
Halo is just a very good game, where as Metroid Prime is more of an art form.
Stick with it and you'll get used to the controls, believe me you won't miss the normal strafing.
As for the lock on, smash buttons and the enemies dead. It's very much like that at the beggining but the further you get in the harder the enemies get and the more strategy you have to use to kill them.
Try taking on 5 of those Chozo ghost things with the heat sensor visor thing and you will know what I'm talking about.
Just don't expect it to be just another straight forward 1st person shooter, this is the mistake a lot of people will be making.
I still strafe round corners, just because it's stupid not to, and leaving huge blind spots in corridors just isn't my thing.
I thought I could never live without strafing properly, but I picked up the metroid controls within seconds and haven't quibbled with them once.
And if you think defeating enemies is all about just locking on to them tapping fire blindly, you will get some nice death sequences pretty soon.
In my opinion, the controls of Metroid suck balls, and so far it pales in comparison to Halo. I thank you.

I've had it for a week, got 37 shines so far. Good game.

I'm not a tard.
