Okay, I just got Metroid Prime today, and I've only been playing it about 2 minutes and I'm worried already. Do you really have to push down the L button to strafe? That's crap! So you can't turn and strafe at the same time? Rubbish! I can't see anywhere in the options to change the controls. You can't even use the camera stick to move your view around, can you?

Someone tell me this isn't so, I need a control system I can use or I'll never play it.

As soon as you start to fight the bosses and Space Pirates (especially the ones with jet packs...) you realise exactly why the controls are as they are. The shooting aspects of the game have little in common with something like Goldeneye. A few shots generally don't bring enemies down, you actually have to be able to dodge their fire and keep your sights on them effectively. If you had to manually aim at enemies, you couldn't circle them half as effectively, and it would be much tougher switching your weapon or visor as you simply don't have enough thumbs...

In short I think anyone should play this game for a fair while before dismissing it because of the controls. I know when I first played Doom on the SNES years back I couldn't get the hang of the FPS controls. Metroid Prime is much the same. It may look like a FPS, but the controls are very different, meaning you have to approach it as such, and the controls may seem a bit strange at first...

Anyhoo. I defeated Omega Pirate last night. Incredibly tough boss!

It took me quite a bit of time to get used to the controls as they're unlike any other FPS, but when I finally did get the hang of them, they're bloody perfect.
I haven't played it as much as I'd have hoped so far, but from what I have played, I'd say it's far superior to the often monotonous Halo in just about every aspect.

I can't play FPS. I'm crap at them.

This lets me hold a button, and auto-aim at them.

I can kill things without getting killed.

This is good.

But it's not trying to be a FPS, is it. It's more about the exploration.

I like it more than I thought I would, and am glad it's not an FPS, because FPS gamers have c***-breath.

Snuggly incurs the power of the mong-lord by criticising a game the Nintendo fans are pooing their nappies over.

*claps
I played it at the weekend also.
It's Mechwarrior with knobs on.

Snuggly. Out of interest, how much of the game have you done?

I really didn't like the controls at first. I bared with them and finally I find it all natural now. Changing to the Visor and inbetween weapons mods is simply smooth... :)

There's actually a really great storyline in Metroid, it just doesn't progress through cut scenes like in most games.

The game's worth owning for the Space Pirates alone, an absoloutly brilliant enemy. You don't encounter them propely though till a bit later on in the game. Fighting a whole crowd of them in the dark with the thermal scanner on is worth the price of admission alone.
