When I go back to Singapore, I'm sure I'll be taking atleast 500 shots a day.
Did I mention I'll be selling prints? =) yep, it'll help pay for the travel expenses. I'm not going to be sitting on the beach all day and write a little blog about how I got sunburn. I'll be up at 7am working till after midnight. Taking lots of photos, video clips, etc. And I'll be loving every minute of it ^^

Ah then yes, I'll need to use databases then. Thanks for cleaing that up with me Garin =)

This is the information on my server =)
Operating system: Linux
Kernel version: 2.6.9-42.0.2.ELsmp
Apache version: 1.3.37 (Unix)
PERL version: 5.8.7
PHP version: 4.4.3
MySQL version: 4.1.21-standard
Hopefully this is all good. Also I noticed this.
Postgresql Databases
Not sure what they are, but I have 8 of them.

Yep =)
I even installed the sponsored script. Unfortunately I couldnt get it to work and I think the guy stopped updating it in 2003. I sent an email several days ago but I havent received a reply. =(
HTML Rotate (the one under it), is pretty good and I got it working. Unfortunately it doesnt let me create advertiser pages and although it lets me create lots of 'zones' it doesnt use MySQL. So I dont think it would handle 100+ zones/banners. =(
At the moment it's my backup. Which means if I cant find anything better then I'll use that until I can afford to pay someone lots of money to do something I want.
I do have another script. It does create advertise pages. (infact some of the ideas below I've borrowed from it). However I cant get the zone thing to work properly. So it's randomly selecting any banner instead of the banner in its zone.
It's a good script but not sure how stable it would be because it does some many other things that are useless to me. Like storing all these IP lists and banner exchange things.
Here it is. Also it doesnt use a MySQL database =(
ASP or PHP are options; there is also Coldfusion or JSP, but such options would depend on your host provider, and what scripting engines they provide.

hello cjh =)
I'm still working on the ad banner script. This is what I want it to do...
----
Okay, to pay for all my trips and to support myself, I'd like to sell banner ad space on my website. As well as having a few google ads and affiliate programs.
Standard banner, 468 x 60 (gif, jpg, bmp, flash)
1 at the top of every page on my site.
Because my website is so large and diverse I'd like to set up 'zones/groups'. So for instance, if I have an advertiser who wants to advertise his webcomic, I place his banner in the 'webcomic' zone. If someone wanted to advertise a villa in France, then I would put their banner in that zone. You get the idea =)
Each zone should rotate up to 4 banners.
I need to be able to create/edit and delete, accounts for advertisers. If they have two banners in different zones, then I'm fine with them having seperate accounts, if it's easier.
While setting up each accounts, I need to provide several bits of information.
Campaign Name: cjhwebdesign
Name: Jo Bloggs
Email:
Comments: ((Optional): Might be interested in doing more campaigns
Note: If it's simple to store other bits of information like, country, tel number etc, then I'd like that seperate instead of using the comments.Because I'll be out of the country a lot, I won't be able to start and stop campaigns manually. So I'll need this script to do it for me. So I'll need the following;
Start Date: (pull down menu - 04/16/07)
End Date: (pull down menu - 04/23/07)
So by selecting 04/16/07, the banner will start rotating at 00:00:00 on 16th April. Which is midnight tonight.
By selecting 04/23/07, the banner should stop rotating and the campaign should end at 23:59:59 on 23rd of April. Unless it would be a lot easier if I just make it 04/24/07 and have it stop at 00:00:00 =)
Now for the banner information.
Banner URL: http://www.mywebsite.com/cjhwebdesign.gif
Site URL: http://www.cjhwebdesign.co.uk
ALT: cjh Website Design
When I create an advertiser account, they should get an email welcoming them with their login name, password and URL to where they can view their stats.
When they go to this page, they can enter their username and password. If they've forgotten either, they should be able to enter their email address to have a reminder sent to them.
Once they've logged into their account, it will show them when the campaign started or will start and when it will finish. It should also display the number of clicks and impressions their banner has had so far. It would be nice if they could have a daily record instead of a total. But I dont think they need it.
Once the campaign has ended, they are sent a final email informing them that it's ended, giving them the final total clicks and impressions and after a week I'll delete the campaign myself.
If they want to do a new campaign I'll create a new one. If they want to extend their campaign, then I should be able to edit the running campaign and change the 'end date'.
I could have made it more complicated and threw it lots of other nifty features but I wanted to keep it simple so it should hopefully be more stable and cheaper/easier =)
Oh and the MySQL database is so I can have the 100+ zones and banners.
----
I'd like it to be done in Perl because I already have a few scripts from Garin that were done in Perl.
I think the only other options are PHP and ASP right? They're fine but as someone who has forgotten everything about PHP, I wouldnt feel comfortable having a PHP website.
This is hopefully the last script I will need, it's also the most important. Though knowing me once my site is up, I'll have lots more ideas.
What is my website?I thought I should add this for those new to my project.
It all goes back to 1996. Its when I gave up the idea of doing a 9to5 job and wanted to work for myself. Since then I've tried doing several projects but nothing really happened. However I learnt a lot over the years. (Just not perl *pout*). It's been about a year and a bit since I started this new project. Garin and Hmmm probably thought I gave up on it, but no, it just got bigger and I had to make a lot of changes, which I'm pretty happy with ^^ (oh and we sold our old house which really ate up a lot of my time).
So anyway my website. Well think of it as a travel and language website, though the main aspect of my site is me =) and my trips around the world.
Travelling around the world is something I've always wanted to do. Before my trip to Singapore in October, the last time I travelled abroad was to Hong Kong in 1995. This kind of project isn't unique, infact I know of a handful of people who have done it or are doing it. What makes my site so special? Well I'd love to tell you all now, but I really do want it to remain a suprise =) Don't worry you're not the only ones. Even my girlfriend thinks I'll take years to get my site done and she knows as much as you lot do.
Things are progressing a lot faster now and I have a clearer picture of what the end product will look like. So I'm hoping to get this banner ad thing sorted as it's the last hurdle I need to jump before the big day. =)
Okay that's everything, questions?
> *groan* Forget UK perl sites, find a freelancer/business in your
> local town/area.
That would be ideal yes, but unfortunately there's no such business in Tewkesbury =( infact I dont think there are any in Cheltenham and Gloucester either.
> And here is the single best reason to try to find somebody

That would be great but I'd fear such consultations would add to a bigger price tag and money is something I dont have a lot of at the moment. =(
That and I just need a few sentences to put across what I need. =)

Good idea, thanks Garin. :)

That's true, and I can see how it can cause problems. Luckily from experience with you Garin, I can easily describe my requirements down to the last detail without any confusion. ^^
Cheers Garin, you've been most helpful. 10 points =)
