Got a little excited about RTS games the other day.

Aside from the average sounding Alien vs Predator game are there any other RTS games in progress for Xbox?

Link up would be perfect for these aswell.

Counter Strike'll be good.

Old RTS games that were good on consoles include Dune 2 & Megalomania on the megadrive and C&C on the N64 (apart from the crappy commando missions which I skipped through cheats).

Yes, of course I have. There's less skill to it than Ghost Recon from my observations of it and it's full of 'tards, cheaters, people who take it too seriously, text talkers, and morons arguing about FPS. Not to mention people who boot you from the servers because you- unlike them- haven't played the game to absolute perfection.

Seeing as this will all be absent from the Live version it should be excellent.

I've played LAN counter strike with 16 players and I have to say I agree with Bell and Ali.

Counter Strike has many features that require a keyboard input for use (assigning a certain item to a key e.g smoke grenade) - There would'nt be enough buttons on the controller for this.

But on the point Bell made - He's right. Gamers will be split into groups and gaming will become unfair.

But who says the Xbox CS will be a straight PC port? The developer might be making it more console friendly for use on Live.

Counter Strike will work, Ghost Recon does so no reason this won't. The accuracy improved by mouse keyboard comibination is irrelevant, if no one can use them to play it on Live then we're all equal anyway.

Releasing a keyborad/mouse combination would be a VERY bad idea. Why ? You instantly split the players - those who play casually and don't buy the other controllers, and those that do.

Xbox Live has always been about keeping a level playing field and letting people's actual skills do their talking for them rather than their hardware, unlike PC online gaming...

I can never be bothered with them. I always find that they're stupidly addictive for the first few days, then after that I totally loose intrest.

They are doing. Counter Strike wouldn't work without a mouse and keyboard because its absolutley crucial to have 100% accuracy. That didn't aid the PSONE with Command and Conquer Red Alert though. The whole layout had changed and it didn't feel right playing it on a console. I like to have the TV on when I play RTS and strategy games as sometimes you just have to sit back and wait for something to happen.

I see no reason why Microsoft won't bring out a mouse and keyboard.

I don't think it would be a popular market. I would much prefer keyboard and mouse for something like Desperados, Commandos, Command and Conquer etc. Its the only genre that has to be played on the PC to be enjoyed to its fullest extent. I don't think anyone would argue with that.
