Not the same link, but it's the story

http://news.zdnet.co.uk/hardware/ emergingtech/0,39020357,2103206,00.htm

And this should interest you Dr Gonzo in relation to Australia because it reversed the 2001 ruling in Australia that the chips were legal and has returned them to illegal status,

ZDNet is quite good for news like this.

Someone posted the link in the life forums a while ago because they were doing the topic of piracy for a project, I'll see if I can find it.

They sell pre-owned consoles and pre-owned games. Surely if selling chipped consoles is gonna pee off Sony (and the other two companies) then selling pre-owned is gonna pee them off just as much. After all, they make NO money out of that, yet the retailers make a huge percentage of profits on it.

While I'm not in a million year's trying to endorse Nomino's rubbish, that's a pretty unfortunate locality to link to as in Australia chipping your PS2 is legally protected (unless something's changed very recently). The basic problem around the world is that you own the console and are free to alter/modify/destroy your property in anyway you choose. In a case against mod chip installers in Aus, the court took the line that if the chip had any possible legitimate use, they'd do nothing. They also agreed with the modders that the region locking system was open to be tampered with as it restricted free trade, so that was the legitimate reason for the chips.

The States are at the other end of the scale where legislature outlaws anything facilitating piracy. UK (unless changed in the last few months) can't decide and have gone to amazing lengths to avoid the problem. A company called Channel Technologies reportedly developed the first mod chip to enable direct booting of copies, but was only shut down because their chip also altered to boot screen to display their logo. The court said to do this they must have tampered with Sony's copyrighted BIOS sequence, so were stopped because of a totally spurious point in relation to piracy. Essentially they were crippled not because their chips allowed you to play pirated software, but because they displayed the company logo during booting!

This was a particularly hollow victory for Sony as it told mod chip developers that all they need to do is bypass the BIOS totally. Since this decision, about three years ago now, Sony haven’t had a major victory against a mod chip developer in the UK.

Like I said though, not totally up-to-date on this anymore, if Belldandy has a link or reference of any kind for the case he mentioned earlier I’d like to look at it.

Well they were never legal, so that's a nice paradox for you.

Because trading standards are lazy computer illiterate people for the most part and more concerned with the humongous pile of pirate goods flooding into the UK this Christmas.

Which is why the Euro PS2 has no RGB Scart on DVD playback ? Which is why Macrovision was built in? Which is why Sony builds copy protection into the games ?

Considering all consoles are just streamlined PC parts I could probably turn my Xbox into a component in a guided missile given the sufficient time, however that would not mean Microsoft are encouraging people to do that. Idiot.

Word of advice Nomino, unless you get someone else on side then you'll never out argue the forum, you will provide a little bit of entertainment though, Kind of like a 100K court jester type thing...
