Microsoft, by way of announcing its Xbox strategy for Christmas in the UK, has revealed today that there will be no immediate axe taken to the retail price of the console before 2004.
Expectations were high following Nintendo's slashing of GameCube to £79.99 that Microsoft would follow with a price cut of its own prior to Christmas, especially since Nintendo's machine has begun to outsell the Xbox for the first time in months (2 to 1).
However, Microsoft has instead chosen to place its yuletide hopes in a bundle that features the console, Halo and Midtown Madness 3 and a voucher for two months' subscription to Xbox Live. This Xbox bundle will retail for £139.99, on shelves from today.
Industry watchers will be following Sony's, Nintendo's and Microsoft's Christmas fortunes in the UK closely, in particular the clash between GameCube and Xbox.
While Sony is in an unassailable position and likely to do very well with EyeToy this Christmas, Nintendo is looking stronger than it has for some time, sales likely to be driven further by the arrival of Mario Kart: Double Dash!! on November 14. Let the battle commence.
Hmmmm exciting.

Alastair you have been here for 546 days... I was here about 500 days when you joined and so I would have been in full swing.
I have... always have been... a forum character. I got annoyed with the staff, started numerous console wars, caused chaos and hunted Notables. I've lost almost all of those characteristics bar my favourite... my incredible... undying love for Nintendo.
I am 100% in Nintendo's court yes, I support EVERYTHING they do yes. This is just part of who I am... I am the personfication of Nintendo.
Surly you knew this.
So a bad word to Nintendo will ensure a reply from me. Simple. It means that I can almost always cheer up a disheartened Nintendo fan.
But saying something like Capcom are more interesting than Nintendo on the Gamecube is just crap. Sorry but it is. Saying Viewtiful Joe rivals Nintendo games... is true. But saying Capcom games in total keep the cube more interesting is... as i say... crap.
Hence the argument.
Dringo, and many others, myself included, find MP, ED, WW, MS etc rich, fun and inventive, and I am sure MK, MP2, Mario 128, Too Human etc will all be even better.
Others, NB and Ali, obviously find them less entertaining, for differing reasons.
Now shut up all of you.
I am thinking about it. What have Nintendo done that is new and interesting? What have they done that I have not seen before?
What have Capcom done that I have seen before? Oh wait, VJ.
No sod it I'm not getting into that debate again.
Nintendo games:
Wave Race, Smash Brothers, Wario World, Luigi's Mansion, Doshin the Giant, Mario Sunshine, NBA courtside, Wind Waker, Metroid Prime, Pikmin, Animal Crossing, Starfox Adventures and Eternal Darkness.
Capcom games:
Resident Evil, Resident Evil 2, Resident Evil 3, Resident Evil 0, Product number: 03, Viewtiful Joe, Mickey mouse.
Think about it.
Just stop it!
Live in Viewtiful harmony.
VJ on the other hand isn't like anything else I've played, at least not in recent memory.
