Ok, I am going to rant. Any terms like "You" and "You people" are not directed at anyone here in particular, just in a "people suck" kind of way, so if you take offence?
That's probably because you feel guilty, so deal with it.

I've been reading about this Northern Ireland situation, and it's just another item in a long list of reasons why I despise 95% of the people that inhabit this planet.
I started a thread called "Please help me, I'm an idiot" in the DVD thread, and it ended up with me, Hooplah and Meka basically saying that this planet, as a species, is doomed to fail.

And for no other reason than it's blind stupidity and inability to deal with anything it perceives as different or strange.
Be it bullying kids, idiot religious folk murdering those that disagree (and I don't care what religion you are, murdering is wrong, if you disagree, then you're an idiot that needs more than the concept of heaven to save your worthless soul), people not bothering to learn as much as they can before they die.

There are so many things wrong with us, and we will never ever overcome these things and evolve.
I look around and I see idiot behaviour from most people on this planet.
Be it the mindless fools that decried Brasseye without even watching it, people that think Eminem should be banned, people that ban the teaching of the theory of evolution because it goes against their own beliefs...all good reasons to nuke this stupid planet and start over again.

We've had our chance and we blew it, and continue to blow it every single day that we continue to stumble along and bump into glass doors.
Be it moron tv shows that serve no purpose other than keep you inside and not doing anything positive to change your world, to The Sun - a worthless rag that thinks a football team winning a game is more important than civil war and murder in Rwanda.
I am ashamed to be part of this planet if I stop to think about what an idiotic species we are.

Popstars that think they matter, politicians refusing to hold peace talks because they don't like someone and condemn the rest of us to a lifetime of war and murder.
So many reasons to just hit "Eject" and go somewhere quiet.
Like the moon.

I see it in chimps that hate people because they're from another country, look different, speak funny or don't fit in with what they percieve their version of events to be.
I see it in newspapers that take pride in creating anti-german feelings over a goddamn football match.
Any number of things that are in plain view, but we're too concerned with watching soap operas to care.

Nike using kids to make sneakers for us to buy with our hard-earned cash and all people can say is "Well that's business"
No it's not just business, get off your lazy, ignorant backside and do something to stop this. Join Amnesty International, protest outside stores, write to MPs and Prime Ministers - just do something other than shrug and stuff burgers into your fat, complacent faces.

Just get involved dammit, if you feel strongly enough about this refugee situation, make your voice heard, don't just post in a forum, it changes nothing. Write to newspapers and MPs and Prime Ministers.

But you wont do that. And that makes me sick.
You holier-than-thou types that get on your soap-boxes but do exactly nothing about anything because Buffy is starting soon and what-can-we-do anyway?
Ghandi was just one man, that kid that stood in front of the tanks in Tianneman Square was just one person. You're just one person.
"Singular Action Initiates Plural Awareness" - just do something to change one little thing and it starts from there.

But what happens? Nothing. Nothing at all, because we're all too wrapped up in earning the most money, getting the nicest house, marrying the nicest girl and having kids that look like kids.
We're a nasty little race of self-obsessed me-monkeys, and I don't see that ever changing.
Ever.
Stand up for something you believe in.
Make your voice heard instead of tutting and looking the other way.

But again, nothing. Met with blank stares and confused angry voices.
People start to debate something, but because they dont know about the situation, it descends into shouting and name-calling and killing because we're too arrogant to say "Actually, I don't know everything" or, god forbid, "I'm sorry".
It's all very well putting forward a well-balanced initial view, but you can't defend it because you spend your time watching bullsheet tv shows and hording posessions in nice houses with big doors so you can shut out the nasty world.

People make me sick, but very few people will take the time to consider any points I've raised and just start shouting at me instead of reasonably discussing.
So I'll sit on my boat, waiting for the end so I can paddle off and find a nice, quiet land to start things over again, you can all chuck rocks and spears at me.

Quite frankly, I don't care.

There's physical evolution; technological evolution; but no spiritual evolution - herein lies the root of the problem.
(I use the word spiritual in its purest sense. Not in a religious sense).

The fact that these arguments exist is testament to the unavoidable fact that as a race we really don't have too much chance of making it. The way that societies have shaped the world went wrong somewhere, the effort to rectify the mistakes made due to overbearing aggression and ignorance would be gargantuan.

The mess that this country is in, let alone the rest of the world is bad enough. We have caused nothing but problems for ourselves through the backward and unscrupulous manipulation of other people, leaving us in the mess that we find ourselves in today. Cause and effect, one of the most basic scientific principles has come into play. The mistakes were made in the past were due to ignorance, the human mind in general had not evolved enough to grasp the effects of it's physical actions on other people. The effect is the rot on society that we see today.

The late 19th early 20th century saw the best and worst that mankind can offer. The leaps made in the realms of science and engineering were tremendous, but as a race we are unable to move emotionally with those advances. I quote;

"Fear will keep the local systems in line, fear of this Battlestation".

The parallels that can be drawn from a line from a fantasy film strike home with shocking accuracy to the social climate that we have been borne through. As a race, it seems that we are stuck mentally. Our spears have evolved, but the functioning mind behind them has changed little since the caveman. We cover ourselves in the glory of our advancements, without realising that we are out of our depth, our anger is redirected and used to fuel the careers of men and women who claim to be making a difference.

After the end of the Tory government in this country, I was interested to see what it was like to live under Labour. Can anybody tell me what the difference is? What sweeping changes have been made? How is our society moving forward since the change? The only difference I can see is that people selling Socialist Worker shout anti-labour slogans now, they don't even bother with the Tories anymore.

Entire populations are controlled by what is printed in the papers, what is viewed on the TV or heard on the radio. We are kept like children, blinkered, gagged, our hands in our pockets. We are not trusted with the truth about the world, simply because they know full well that we would lynch those involved if we knew the facts about the way we live. It's safer if we shut up and watch Eastenders. There's a time for entertainment, whatever form you choose do so is up to you. Just as long as you're not outraged by what's really going on. Governments know only too well the power of the people when they decide to make a stand;

Look at the Poll Tax riots for an example of what a body of people can do if angered enough to group together and make a stand. All the while we are busy wondering who's kicked out of a house next it's less likely to happen.

Religion is twisted, used against the people it is intended to serve. I don't believe in God, or whatever you intend naming the omnipotent force that created you. How can a religious person justify killing in the name of God? It is difficult to grasp the mentality behind these actions, but not if you step aside from the conflict, look at what the human race has become from the outside, then you will see the futility of our being. Religion is used as a tool to achieve the machinations of men who are at best morally unsound, though they tend to be lost to rationality completely.

There's too many things to cover in one go, too many injustices in the world for one person to change everything (cue second-coming), but if enough of us do something, anything to change the route that the human race is taking then we might just sort it out in time.

There's a couple of issues I've just read. Goatboy's one about why people over the world speak English, and Wookiee's about how people are generally kinder to animals than they are to other people.

Firstly, Goaty's as I think that's easier to answer.

People from other countries speak English simply because the chances are, we used to own them. Our Empire covered a third (or was it a half? History was never my strong point) of the world. Therefore people learn English almost as a first language.

Also, as we are the country that went through industrialisation first, all technical documents, the world over, are written in English.

Going on to Wookiee's point. It's a tough one.

The simple fact of the matter is that people are kinder to animals than they are to people. Look at euthenasia (sp?). We have our pets put down to ease their suffering, but not our family. Strange.

It's the same with films. You sit through an hour or so of Braveheart with your girlfriend, watching peoples arms get shopped off, heads removed etc, not a word. As soon as a horse falls over, I here a "Oh! I hope the horse is ok!"

Weird...

Many people - and I include myself - refuse to give to things like Comic Relief because it goes outside the UK.

As I said elsewhere, I believe charity begins at home. Let's get ourselves sorted first.

For what it's worth, the *only* charities I give money to are those that help animals. Humans, in general, aren't worth it.

I can speak French and Latin.

As long as we're talking about this issue, as a multi-national company that I work for, we have all manner of customers from places like Holland to Dubai.

And they all speak English.
Does that mean that our language is the dominant factor, or that we are backwards and ignorant as a nation, seeing as most other nations speak 2-3 languages?

I have no comment, as this is not an issue I wish to discuss here.

I don't. Whats the point in going abroad if everything is the same as over here?

Why go abroad to somewhere when if you walk down the street you see the same shops as over here?

I go abroad to see different cultures, to experience different things. If I wanted to go on holiday and have a McDonalds, I could go and camp with the gyppo's up on the bypass.

Try going on holiday to india, or parts of africa, then you'll see what I mean.

That's a stereotypical 'foreigners' view of the English, and possibly says more about your thoughts than anyone else's!

I don't *expect* anything of the sort when I go abroad. I go to experience the differences, as I think do most people.

Why expect 'England' abroad when you can stay here and have the real thing?

As for the language issue - English if the World's language, and so it's just 'expected' that someone will be able to speak it. If they don't, so what?

I don't speak any foreign languages, and I wouldn't learn one just to go on holiday. If I lived abroad, though, that's a different matter. I'm damn sure if I'd lived in Germany for 13 years I'd be fluent in German.

Just like my dad.

"There's no point me voting Liberal, because they'll never get in."

Yes, but they won't get in because everyone thinks that. If everyone who wanted to give the Liberal's a chance actually did vote for them, they'd probably get a landslide.

(Note: I'm not saying you should vote Liberal... it's just an example that's occurred to me in 'real life'.)

Yeah just like we do when we travel to any other european nation... ? Crap. We go over there expecting chip shops on every corner, lineker bars in every town and every native to speak English. The queens english for gods sake!

Oh, give me strength...
