So the final season is upon us, with promises of all the questions from the previous 5 seasons to be answered over the next 18 episodes, I for one am greatly looking forward to what's to come.
This past week we had the 2 part season opener 'LA X I & II' and, in my opinion at least, all the hype for this season was justified. Like everyone else I had heard the rumours of cast members returning and was pleased to see how it was done by playing on the whole 'did the bomb go off or didn't it'. I'll be interested to see where they take the 'off-island' stuff over the next few episodes, it seems obvious to me that all the characters will begin interacting with each other on some level after landing in LA, maybe adding fuel to the 'destiny/fate' themes that have been knocked about in previous series. The differences of the plane to the crashed one are also interesting, no Shannon, no coffin and an additional passenger in Desmond...
On the island, it was good to finally see The Temple and the 'fountain' which healed Ben all those years ago. It's interesting to note that the water had 'changed' since Jacob died suggesting the island might now be under the control of Jacobs Rival. I have a feeling that note that was in the ankh says more than the Japanese bloke and the hippy let on... With regards to Sayid, do you think he's really alive (after everyone agreeing he was dead) or is he likely to be a 'vessel' for Jacob in the same way Locke is for JR/Man in Black/Smokie? The only argument against this is that Locke's body is still dead and separate whereas Sayid's isn't.
Also a hint at Richards origins from JR, "nice to see you out of those chains". Does that mean Richard was on the Black Rock? Or was he a slave or imprisoned for something else. I think the Black Rock is more likely based upon the start of the Season 5 finale but it's another 'wait and see' situation that I'm sure will be answered over the next 3 months.
Looking forward to next Friday!
> We know Locke survived a similar fall
Albeit it with a horrifically mangled leg.
Also consider this, Desmond wanted to go with Un-Locke (possibly due to something Widmore told him or the fact he can now see flashes of the future again) so who says he didn't want to get thrown down the well. Widmore's team have been looking for the EMP pockets on the island with a view to 'utilising' Desmond on them in some way. The well is clearly on top of one of these pockets, based on Un-Lockes story, so this could have been the plan all along. We know Locke survived a similar fall (Widmore would also know this as he met Locke off-island) so Desmond is going to still be alive, ready to accomplish whatever it is Widmore wants him to do.
It looks like he's taken over Jacob's role in the off-island world, seemingly attempting to get people to realise the Island's existence, and their life on it. A bit extreme to plough Locke down, but it was probably the near-death experience it would need to get him to realise, perhaps?
I've done a bit of reading, and it seems some people believe the on-island Desmond is in some degree aware of his off-island self, and vice-versa. Perhaps the running over of Locke was just revenge for getting shoved down a well?
Bah, who knows.
Purgatory then. Or not. Or something similar. But then what about Widmore, what the hell was the Dharma Initiative really up to? Did they know about all of this? and the Others?
How are they going to wrap all that up in just 6 more episodes?!
Just read that next weeks episode is called 'Everybody Loves Hugo'. Awesome, Hurley episode this week then :)
Further confirmation this week that the two storylines are connected. Although I'm not sure as to whether or not the EMP on Desmond forced him travel to the off-island storyline (least likely) or it caused something to spark in the brain of whatever the other consciousness is to 'remember' the island. The only other people who have specifically mentioned seeing flashes of other experiences are the dead ones (Charlie and Faraday) which could be an important point. It's also worth considering how Widmore knew about this other existence and how he knows how to access/affect it...
Also, judging by his comments to Sayid towards the end of the episode, Desmond can now either see flashes of the future again or Widmore had a conversation with him regards of a 'secret mission' of sorts.
Only 7 episodes left :(
