It's this kind of comment that makes me want to headbutt people.
It's on the advert for BG&E, it's on the inside cover of NGC, among other places. You'd think IGN had more sense..

And mine.
It doesn't mean we're not loyal Nintendo gamers either.
It means we have good taste in games :P.
There's nothing wrong with the backtracking, things change as you go through the levels so It's no like you're doing the same thing over and over and, as long as you don't get stuck, it doesn't really prove a problem.
I never got stuck. Maybe that's why I liek it so much, I don't no, but it certainly isn't just to add length. I think spacing islands out just so travelling to each one takes ages is worse. Far worse. Looking for coins is just crap, too, they could be anyone, looking around every section of every level just gets boring, and a lame copy of the red coin system (that actually worked very well).
Wanna talk about pathetic ways of extending length?
How about having to back track... now there is a pathetic way of adding length.
You can go on about this aspect and that aspect lacking by itself, but who cares? The finished game is the most enjoyable Cueb game out, and seemingly flawless from my point of view. I'll admit that people may not like it and some areas of it may annoy, but come on, it's pure brilliance from start to finish.
Both Zelda and Mario Sunshine had thier high points, and you could spend hours just messing around, but along the way there were obstacles that were just plain annoying and made each game oh-so monotonous. Come on, collecting the Triforce peices and having to search around for blue coins was just a pathetic excuse to lengthen each of these titles.
I had much more fun going through Mario 64 and Majora's Mask, so none of it was really that new, nor as enjoyable as I'd already experienced.
Prime is genius. Zelda is great. Sunshine is good.
Of course, in my opinion.
I can't blindy follow game series' just because they're Nintendo? Okay but what has that got to do with Metroid Prime considering it is a Nintendo game.
I follow game styles, the style of game I enjoy... not the style of game I don't.
Although I enjoyed MP its overall style had nothing on traditonal Nintendo fare.
MEtroid Prime is even a fantastic First Person Adventure or a Crap First Person Shooter or Crap Adventure...
We're all amazed how they combined the two that we forget the game is naff.
Anyway, Metroid Prime is certainly an essential game. You can't blindly follow game series' all your life simply because they're Nintendo games.
You'll never find anything as good as Prime on the XBox, it's the most Nintendo game we've had yet, along with Pikmin. Original, fresh, and brilliant to play, that's what Nintendo create on each of their platforms, and well, if I wanted countless Zelda and Mario rehashes (that don't even live up to the originals) I'd have stuck with my N64 and played through Majora's Mask and Ocarina of Time until I was finally sick of it, then move onto odler games.
Any game that revolutionises a genre is essential, saying otherwise is just stupid. Mario Kart may be huge (and the best Mario Kart in the series for me), but you can't sit down and play it for hours on end. Prime conpells you to do so and repetitive, shallow gameplay doesn't get in the way of that.
The the perfect merging of adventure and FPS' and you'd rather play sequels? What happened to people wanting Nintendo to make exciting, new games instead of old series'?
Ah well, I can see that you obviously aren't going to give in and keep on with your 'I'm right, you're wrong attitude', so what's the point, eh? :-P
;-)
As for Prime, I haven't played it at all in the last 9-10 months but will be going back to it soon. I wasn't impressed much when I played it last year despite having it pre-ordered for a bloody eternity. I will probably enjoy it more now though with only one console to play games on and purely because I have more patience to put up with the scanning. I just wish I wasn't one of those people who feels they have to fully complete a game...
Prime is a nice addition to those, certainly not essential.
Prime is the best in the Metroid series, it's also the best game out on the Cube and at the moment, the best game released.
