Hi there!

I've avoided buying a games machine for a long time due to various commitments, but I'm now in a position to join the gaming community. I'm going to get myself a PS2 and was wondering if anyone had any advice?

There seem to be many deals out there, but where's the best place for me to buy my console? Also, what do I need to get myself started? And finally, what games do people recommend for a beginner? I'm into football in a big way and I've been told PES3 is the best one to go for - do you agree? Also can anyone recommend good sports and driving games as these have been the kind of games I've enjoyed playing on my freind's consoles. Oh, and any good shoot-em-up games?

Any advice would be much appreciated
Cheers

I'd recommend a GameCube as a personal preference, but as you're looking for a DVD player, Pro Evo and a decent selection of racing games then the Xbox is for you.

Not such a fan of sports games really. I love Hockey, and Top Spin. ESPN NHL all the way.

Don't forget sports if EA go ahead and code for XBox, which looks likely.

I'd go for an Xbox as well.

I have all three consoles, and the PS2 is just a dust collector. A rather bad one at that.

It's either on the Xbox, or there is a better alternative on it. That goes for everything bar weird Japanese RPGs that I don't like anyway.

Xbox is infinitely better for racers and FPS games, plus it is getting an online version of PES.

Blame work, EverQuest and going for 100% in Gran Turismo. I still surf by daily it's just that there's not much to say in the forums here that hasn't already been said elsewhere, so I don't post much nowadays.

Don't get a PS2.

Oh and Pro Evo comes out on Xbox around Xmas time this year, with full online play.

I saw this post and thought of you:

"There is always some nerdy little miscreant that has no other way to make him/herself feel better about his/her pathetic existance than to mess with people on a medium that provides complete protection from repercussions. Becasue, God knows, you would never, in real life, speak to half these people the way you do on the boards.

In conclusion, just remember that everything that goes round, comes round, and your pathetic litte butt is next against the wall. I hope in the future you will grow a little and become a usefull member of society, but I am not holding my breath."

PES3.

Great game, and the only console game I still play every day, 6 months on. I don't know whether FIFA has that replay value, as I've only played it a few times, but it's also a fun game. Buy PES3 patched if you have a chipped PS2, or if you play a lot of 4-way multiplayer, and probably a more fun game, but get FIFA if you're more interested in licenses, lots of leagues, lots of players, FAR superior commentary and other visual effects.

May all change when I get round to buying that GameCube though.
