256MB, 512MB, 1GB, 2GB, and finally 4GBs

Panasonic's 64MB SD Memory Card -- $99.95
Panasonic's 32MB SD Memory Card -- $59.95
Panasonic's 16MB SD Memory Card -- $39.95 (this price is falling and will be cheaper than 8 MB memory cards on the PS2)

Look at those stats! I mean a 16MB memory card for cheaper than a PS2 8MB. It begs the question why do Sony charge so much? Well becasue they can and get away with it.

Back to the stats the size is due to Nintendo's dislike for memory cards so buy one and never ened one again!

2GB and 4GB are bigger than GC games for god sakes! Why do we need memory cards with more memory than the games and stamp size as well! This is also further proof that they may make Snes games on them or looking at the size 64 games!

Well I'm stunned I need a sit down (oh I already am)

What do you think? Outageous, Memory cards bigger than games and over $300 for 4GB you could by 7 or 8 games for that!!!!!!

Wow well thats Nintendo and panisonic for you.

You forgot compression. MagicGate compresses data whilst encrypting it.

Have the console wars now descended to such pathetic levels that we now argue over the size of the memory cards? Grow up, for pete's sake!

The reason Sony's cards are expensive is that they use Sony's proprietary MagicGate technology, which provides high levels of security. They use this because of their plans for PS2's online future, where information such as bank and credit card details *may* be held on memory cards for ease of purchase.

This technology is the same as that used in their Memory Stick cards (used in their digital cameras, camcorders, walkmans, VAIO PC's etc.) to copy-protect things like MP3's and video clips. It's not a simple non-volatile RAM system as is used in other memory cards (Smartmedia etc.) and therefore they are more expensive to produce.

I agree that that name is rubbish!

Why 59?

Anyway, I'm not going to pay £100 for a memory card....the normal size ones will hopefully be free with 5 reddies in the future anyway :)

Memory cards are no doubt important but these sizes are just ridiculous!

Dringo, you say you got this news from IGN.

You also said that Nintendos memory cards are called Digicards.

Well if you read the page on IGN properly you'd realise that Nintendo were calling the Digicards:

'Memory Card 59'

But I don't know why they were....

Not that that matters so much....
