The "General Games Chat" forum, which includes Retro Game Reviews, has been archived and is now read-only. You cannot post here or create a new thread or review on this forum.
While the quantity of entries was high the quality was "none too hot" with many "fantasy schemes" often involving females.
I must disallow any general suggestions of games championships as we did these last year and we are running them this year. I would have taken a different view if the ideas for these had been worked up into fully suggestions (with details).
As I am judging this I can hardly award my own "Two Can Play at This" idea the prize - though undoubtedly we will use something similar for an "introduce a friend" incentive.
YH had a good notion about working with schools and Meka came up with "People are Stupid" idea to give safety advice with every game!
Rakuga deserves a mention for persistence and I particularly liked his suggestion of a One Day Sale. IF we decide to do that then he will get a prize. The problem with one day sales is that once people get used to (even) lower prices they are resistant to buying at the normal prices.
Rakuga also suggested giving better directions to the shops.
I liked Namostar's idea of placing addresses of the shops on internet banners. We'll use this so Namostar - you are A WINNER.
The second winner is Fantasy Meister. He made a couple of reasonable suggestions including better promotion of Reddies. But his idea which caught my imagination was to print an 8 digit number on the receipts for people to match with a number on the internet. This gives us the possibility of running Gameaday in the shops. I'm not sure if we will actually use it but it is the best idea (in my view).
A difficult competition which has clearly stretched imaginations to the limit. Thank you for entering.
Congratulations to NAMOSTAR and FANTASY MEISTER and I won't forget Rakuga IF we use the one day sale idea.

These are the original rules.
The next amazing Special Reserve competition (another one!) is to suggest ideas for attracting people into our Big Club Shops.
The main objective here is to think about the cost effectiveness of your ideas. In order for them to work they need to be, yes you guessed it, low on cost and high on impact.
If you haven't visited all or any of our shops then get yourself down to your local shop and check them out! Visit our Big Club Shops page for further details: http://special.reserve.co.uk/common/shops/shopsindex.php
This competition is open for 1 month and the best ideas that we USE will win a game as part of GAMEADAY. If no ideas are used then I will pick 1 winner that I deem the best.
CLOSING DATE: 27th July 2001 *********MIDNIGHT*********
The challenge has been set. Good luck!
The look of the stores can alos be overhauled and stop being so bland, I looked at the photos of the stores on the site, and, how boring can you get?? Fair enough it will take money to do it up, but where are the colours, I mean, the place looks like Toys 'R' Us!! The sections could be colour coded in terms of the companies trademark colours. Sony section could be black and blue, Nintendo Red and Green, PC Yellow and Orange etc, just liven the place up a bit. You could also drum up a bit of SR propaganda, as I have noticed the high street stores such as Comet have been allowed to directly advertise their pries compared to other stores, so have a look at local prices and highlight your best prices on the hot products.
I have never visited an SR shop myself, as I live in Scotland and you don't live up here, but the gaming community here seem to stick to who they know i.e. Game, EB, Dixons, HMV and Virgin (damn Dundee has a lot of shops), so SR can play on the fact that they are a local company and the biggest independent games retailer in their areas, just play on people's sense of security and their willingness to save money but not at the expense of throwing it into a pit where the owner shuts up shop and runs into the horizon.
Most importantly, the staff have to be good to customers and you must have a varied and willing range of staff. You can't just hire a load of teenagers because they say they have a good interest in games. If you want to take money from kids parents, you have to have older members of staff who they can approach and feel they are getting honest advice on what they should buy their kids. There is no point in a 40+ year old walking into a games shop and being told to buy a PS2 for his nine year old who is really into Pokemon, just because the younger member of staff thinks it is a better console, and I think older staff will level with parents better, especially if they are parents themselves.
Younger people such as myself, like to have a chatter about games with the staff, so unless you have queues out of the door, staff should be allowed to freely chatter with customers about the latest technology and just generally mingle with the customers. Customers wandering about a shop don't really need to be hassled though, and it is usually easy to spot someone who i genuinely seeking help.
There should also be clear signs of what customers should do if they find themselves seeking help. I think everyone who has walked into a shop wanting to buy something, but not quite sure what, usually is more reserved about approaching easy going staff, for the fear of being concieved as stupid, so if they have a friendly sign to point them in the right direction, again the appropriate aged member of staff should be appointed to consult the customer. Young people don't want to be lectured by someone old enough to be their parent and old(er) people don't want to feel patronised by someone young enough to be their kid!!
Hope this helps, and I will be thinking of some more stuff!!
Something like:
Buy games
Cheap Prices
Big Discounts
Special Reserve
This Way
Watch out for that tree...

How about using local shops to run offers in conjunction with SR. Coffee shops or cafes could give a discount voucher for SR with orders, or you could sponsor any street entertainment to advertise the shop.
Have a strip-a-thon day/night. Basically, E-mail some contacts and associates and try and get some entrants before you go ahead. Try fliers too. Here are the categories and prizes:
» Sexiest woman to completely strip - PS2
» Sexiest strip - PS2
» Dirtiest sexual act on stage (maybe) - DC + game of their choice
» Nicest t**s - 2 games
» Nicest bum - 2 games
» Nicest face - 2 games
» Most arousing sexual position - Game
There could also be live pubic hair shaving with some sort of gift voucher.
Another idea is that you get free photos of the best moments of the night with every game/film purchased.
I know, it sounds dirty and perverted but the competition was to get people to the store and let's face it, how many men are going to refuse a free night of stripping? And, how many women would refuse a £300 state-of-the-art games console/man magnet! I think it's a good idea, please look past the controversy and think about it.

Have a every every time someone spend a certain amount of money they get a free gift or money off, for example if someone bought a PS2 they will get a game for half price. You would have to promote this in magazines and newspapers.
Improve the outside of the shop, make it more flash, with the websites name on it aswell as the shops. Have special offers in newspapers so that people can see it and go "ohhh i got to get me some of that"
