You and I in a little toy shop
Buy a bag of balloons with the money we've got.
Set them free at the break of dawn
'Til one by one, they were gone.
Back at base, bugs in the software
Flash the message, Something's out there.
Floating in the summer sky.
99 red balloons go by.
Donkey Konga is set to hit European shores this Christmas, along with Pikmin 2, Paper Mario 2 and Metroid Prime 2. UK gamers are also treated to the long over due release of Animal Crossing and the GBA titles Leaf Green and Fire Red.
Nintendo's childish image may save a potentially bad Christmas. Sony's flagship release is GTA:SA and Microsoft's is of course Halo 2. These are the sequels to the games that single handidly sold the respective consoles. Nintendo are relying on a unique Mario outing and the more hardcore favourite Metroid Prime 2: Echoes. A multiplayer may increase popularity but nit enough to triumph over the 2 AAA titles for the X-box and PS2.
Lucky for Nintendo both the games with Halo 2's online capabilities and GTA 5's horrific content the games are soley aimed at 15 plus (even if it is illegal). The children and parent buying population will turn to Nintendo with Pikmin 2, Donkey Konga, Zelda: Four Swords and Paper Mario 2... games with a very childish appeal.
So Christmas may not be a disaster but who cares? I am not bothered that Mario's paper outing may not impact on the charts. As a Nintendo fan this Christmas is looking like a lot of fun. No real arty games or over the top movie style software... just pure fun. Come Christmas day I'll be beating off to 99 red balloons, turning into paper aeroplanes and controlling 4 little green elves across the screen.
This is why I'm a Nintendo fan
I looked through the thread and I realy didn't see anyone arguing that Nintendo would actually 'clean up' this Christmas. What I see is people saying that there are lots of good games coming out that they, and many others, are looking forward to. Everyone agrees that Halo 2 and GTA will sell more than all the GC games combined, probably, so saying that the sales figres for Nintendo will be disappointing is a moot point.
And you are obviously trying to get a rise out of everyone by saying that E3 was disappointing, it's really reall obvious.

As opposed to the view that only casual gamers are happy if a games's "bigger"?
Stop talking out of your rectum.
Have you actually PLAYED Halo 2? Who's to say what we'll find has been changed/re-invented etc once we finally get it?
Don't ASSume.

That is such a narrow minded view... I'd much rather get the comical expressive world in Wind Waker than a larger version of Ocarina of Time.
A great sequel is when the designers take a title and change it to create a new form of that game. For example stripping out a linear adventure and creating a far more interactive time travel based game.
A time based adventure and turning into a collecting based game.
Sure Iconography and genreal idea stays the same but the game should branch out into new experiences.
GTA 3 took the basic idea of GTA 2 and turned it on its head with a new way of playing the game. Then Rockstar got lazy and created the same game again and now again and just made it bigger with better graphics.
It takes a genius to come up with a concept like GTA 3, but it is lazy to just expand on it. Take Miyamoto, he created Donkey Kong... he could have made it bigger and better with added multiplayer but he didn't... he altered his concept of platformers and his most recent effort is Mario Sunshine.
Barely recognisable.

You really think Nintendo write the content of the magazine?

Haha. Singstar? Haha.

That's just stupid.
More longevity, more levels, more places to explore and expanded multiplayer?
So that's only for casual gamer's to look forward too? I think not.
But anyway, on another note, the annoying thing about Nintendo is that they could so so easily turn things around for very little outlay;
1) Release European versions no later than 2 months after US releases, where possible do a simulataneous release in the USA/UK (UK is biggest market in Europe for games) and then follow up with a later European multilingual version which gradually replaces the UK version in the stores. This way the market that Nintendo Europe derives most sales from - the UK - gets the games with little delay, which in turn means more games released in the year and less lost sales from imports.
2) Never ever repeat the mess that was Animal Crossing's release. Forget pandering to game creators who decided to release a title based on a large yellow giant instead of a game that was imported by thousands.
3) Do what Nintendo does best, innovate. Sony stole the march in this area with Eyetoy and Singstar - Eyetoy should have been a Nintendo idea.
4) Overhaul the Official Nintendo Magazine to give it an image and quality that all ages can find useful instead of those with an age in single digits.
5) Demo Discs. Forget the Nintendo philosophy on this, if people can play and preview games they like the look of you WILL sell more games, Sony, MS, and everyone else make preview versions, and they help to sell games.
6) Promotions, promotions, promotions. People, especially gamers, like free exclusive stuff that they can get for buying stuff, preordering stuff etc Stars was a nice idea but Nintendo does not have the quantities needed to meet the demand. They need a system like Japan's. And retailer tie ins.
7) Online. Forget about it with the GC because you'll end up with a mess like Sony's Central Station unless you put serious work in, but make sure as hell it's on N5 or whatever, because Nintendo does multiplayer games amazingly well. There is a massive number of people who, shock horror, cannot be bothered with online FPS because after a few weeks you realise that there is a hardcore who play nearly all day becoming L33T, whereas Nintendo could offer a large range of games across genres, competitive and co-operative.
8) Get the 3rd party's back. Offer them discounts, funding, something, but get back those that have left and are valuable, though it's probably best to forget about Rare as in hindsight no one is quite sure they know what a decent game is anymore...
