I don't, or very rarely, buy a game as a result of reading a review... The games I have brought are a result of playing the games predecessor or having a 'thing' for the developer. I like certain styles of games, not necessarily different genres but different styles... I prefer the UT FPS's to the Deus Ex / Swat 3 FPS's, more action less thinking. I like to keep my thinking for RPG's and RTS's.
But back to the topic at hand. There will no doubt be some of you who feel that Graphics aren't nearly as important as Gameplay, others who feel the opposite and a select few who're right in the middle or on the fence, as it were. But doesn't it matter... I don't think either is more important. Okay so without Graphics Shenmue wouldn't be the same, but without Gameplay Conker's BFD wouldn't be Conker's BFD!
Games aren't about graphics or gameplay... sure they are attributes the game has but they aren't the purpose of the game. Who is to say that one game is better than another... there is no official company that rates games on how fun they are... they can't decide that... they can't decide which genre's are the best... I mean, I love Mario, at 17 years-old that might come as a shock to you but I don't care... he 'makes-a' me laugh. On the other hand FM hates Mario, but Mario isn't good or bad because of one persons opinion.... Ant thinks RPG's are "dull, dull and... dull!" But Grix might like them... So because Grix likes RPG's does that make them good?! No! Because Ant hates them does that make them bad?! No!
To get to the point, games aren't about Graphics or Gameplay... they're not about which genre they fall into and they're not about how long they last or who they're made by...
Games are about one thing and one thing only... just a 3 letter word...
FUN!
Having fun when you're playing a game is the most important thing ever... Make sure you make the right decision when buying a game or console... it's the fun that counts NOT OTHER PEOPLES opinions or preferances!
You wan't to buy a game? You buy it! Don't let others persuade or desuade you...!
Have fun... it's what gaming is ALL about!

Anyway, back to the topic. I think that there are several things that there are several things that can help to make a brilliant game. If you ask me, a game does need graphics, and good graphics at that. I mean you it be as fun playing the game if the graphics weren't as good as they could be. I love a game with good graphics. But, hey, thats just me.
Graphics don't make a game though. There has to be gameplay. Now then, it is the gameplay that really decides how good a game will be. There is the FUN gameplay, the type of gameplay that everybody likes. After all, what The Game said, "Having fun when you're playing a game is the most important thing ever" is essentially true. Just imagine playing a game that wasn't at least a little fun. You wouldn't want to imagine a game that wasn't fun to play.
There is also the realistic gameplay. With this I am referring to games such as Gran Turismo and Shenmue. This type of games only appeal to certain people, because not everybody likes a realistic experience. Not everybody loves the GT mode in GT, they just like to play the arcade mode.
For me, games need good graphics and good gameplay. Preferably fun and realistic gameplay, for that ultimate experience. But this is just me.
Along with my RRV, I bought SSX, Timesplitters, Tekken Tag and ISS. Only SSX and Timesplitters got fairly good reviews, and yes I agree they are the best 2 games there, but that doesn't by any means make the others bad, only a little less original.
Anyway, back to the main point, I think the most important aspect of any game is the atmoshphere. A game lacking in atmoshphere is usually the most boring and dry experience yet, but add a few good graphical touches, appropriate music and a script which suits the game's feel (not needed for your arcade blasts), then you should e on to a game with a decent atmoshphere. Obviously the game neds to handle well and have a camera which lets you see what is going on, but hey, that isn't really that hard in a 3D landscape, unless you are in confined spaces.
Well, I guess what I am trying to say is, read the reviews and ask opinions, but do not take for granted what percentages/scores say about games, because until you have played a game, you really do not know whether you will enjoy it!!

I dont think its wise to buy or not buy a game based o na review man...
It is, after all the optinion of the reviewer...
Persoinally, before I buy a game, I will check out several reviews (usually on-line) before purchase...
I'll read what the reviewers liked and hated about the games, etc...
I'll apply to that, what I'm after from the game, and wether it meets my expectations...
and I'll make my decision from there...

I cant help but agree with your point man...
Although I suspect that Sony are gogint o be more interested in 'encouraging' the public to purchase HDD ...
Since it also allows the PS2's price to go back up to 299.99 and allow them to advertise the system as selling for 270 (or, at the time of X-Boxs release 200)

the way it works is this. Edge scores games out of 10. UNLIKE mags like NOM, on this scales, 5 is an absolutely average game in any way. 10 is a near perfect game. There have only been a handful of 10/10 games ever (it's like getting 40/40 in Famitsu!).
Anyway, 7 means better than average, definately worth a look. 8 means excellent- should take it seriosly. 9 is must have

Using a popular videogame franchise over the holiday season to overcome competitors and retain market share is NOT!
You must have lost your common sense for about 3 seconds there!
