Who would become the defensive midfielder if Beckham moves onto the right flank?

I see your point but that's why I said that Rooney was the key.
He's the one that needs to make everything click together up front and support either Cole or SWP when needed, sweeping across that final third as he does so effectively for Man Utd. Ashley Cole is probably up there with Cafu in terms of stamina, and SWP was ever-present right the way up and down the right-flank last season at Man City.
Whatsmore, with Beckham behind, Gerrard and Lampard would have free attacking roles and could occasionally stray to the left or right to support on the wing as they often do for their clubs.

They're human just like us and fatigue will start kicking in when playing in the World Cup. They'd be doing twice as much the workload if they had no wingers to overlap.
Don't forget the other team will have 2 widemen on each side, meaning they won't have to put as much effort in come back if they get caught out where England would.

Poor mites, 90 minutes of work twice a week plus training. How do they ever cope?
It would also mean all our attacks would have to come from the middle with through balls.
It will also be very tiring for both Cole and Wright-Phillips doing this for 90 minutes and then having to play like that again 3-4 days later.

Oh if only sven was a member of Sr...

I know glen johnson is not good, but he's about as good as we have got.
And I think you do still need a holding-role midfielder, as this doesn't solve the problem that we will be caught short if somebody cuts in behind Gerrard or Lampard.
