Do they mean anything? I've just found some really lovely looking cider in the larder with a use-by date in 1998... drinkable?

Hmm. Feel a wee bit queasy now, could be for one of 3 reasons:

1) The obvious.
2) Psychosomatic
3) The fact that I've consumed 5 cookies in the space of 15 minutes.

Well, once too much alcohol has been fermented, it kills the fermenters (yeast?).

Meh. I think I've conclusively proved that use-by dates mean jack. They wouldn't keep fermenting as the glucose would run out fairly quickly and the yeast cells would also "die".

You can leave wine for ages,so you can probably leave beer for ages. So I suppose you can have it.

Absolutely super-duper. I also found out that above about 14% alcohol, yeast can't carry on fermenting for some reason or another. So whoever said that they carried on and it became poisonous was talking balls.

I think it turn to vinegar, but only in the open air (i.e. oxygen).
