Do they mean anything? I've just found some really lovely looking cider in the larder with a use-by date in 1998... drinkable?

If it's relatively recently past the cell by date, then the only problem is that it will possibly taste worse.
If it's way past, the fact that beer involves active enzymes and bubbles would surely mean that it's changed a lot.
2 week old cider would be fine to drink for example.
