OMG it's 4.10am and my animation is still rendering :( i still have to put all my mocies together and add music. Then at 8.20am get up and walk in to uni for a 4 hour lecture in which a very tired me will present my animation.

It's all been going wrong here. My 'copy' of premiere has funked up it won't let me use the mpeg 4 codec that i have to use. Now using virtual dub to put them together but this means no fading transitions :( . One of my renders failed twice which means i have to leave it out.

My presentation is a critical review of my project so far. (so far it's looking shoddy) They are going to rip me apart :( i mean yeah the smoke and the lighting rocks but cause of teh transitions i'm screwed. I was on a first for the project so far now this is going to bring me down to like a 2.1 then i just gotta hope the final version gets me another first.

My brain hurts. I have learnt that 3d animation is too unstable to leave to the night before. Theres a lesson there kidds.

If i get the time tomorrow i will post a link to my animation. It's only 30 seconds and it's for a bbc-i channel Spark. Which i happen to do student stuff for.

Well off to finish it all. Had a rant feel abit better head hurts though.

the basic rule with MAX is that if it has a value or a slider, you can animate it. it's a good way of increasing smoke density over time for progressing fires and things :)

I am rendering the whole movie as i had a problem with the pieces reflecting light for no reason and need a whole movie to test it properly. It only takes about 5 minutes to render. But it's a pain when it's just little things that i have forgotten to change before i hit the render button and then relise when the finished avi is viewed.

I didn't relise to be honest that i could keyframe the wind power to stop after a certain time, or more i didn't think of trying that. I will give it a go. The animation was about 5 seconds in length at first but i cut it down becasue the pieces where being blown around.

This is sort of a test for a larger animation that is a test for my dissertation animation. I will start work on the bigger test soon which will be a sort of first person view, shooting of a wall and windows with pieces going everywhere and glass breaking.

the wind blowing the pieces along the floor doesn't look too bad mate, you'll just have to keyframe the wind power so that it wears off and the pieces stop moving.
i'll download the video tomorrow probbaly, i'm just off out...
are you rendering to stills or do you have to re-render the whole AVI when you test different things?

This is only the 3rd thing i have used a 'Parray' on to get explosions, i wasn't sure how to angle the explosion so at the moment i have a 'wind' system on it to blow the pieces in a direction. But the fatal hole in that plan is that the wind blows the pieces along the floor which looks silly.

I have decided that the projectile wil just travel off in to the distance, about to re-render taking your advice about the dust cloud. Will post it up to replace the current one on my site if you download it about 10 mins from this post it will be different.

I have changed the chunks that fly off but still not to sure about them. i mite just set it to half what i had in the first render.

EDIT: just updated it had to render it 3 more times to get it looking right, i left the shadows on the dust and it looked rubbish.

looking good mate!

the only things that sprang immediately to mind were:

that the small dust cloud is perhaps TOO small
the projectile vanishes on impact
there's an impact frame where the model vanishes and the particle system hasn't started yet, leaving a big gap in the pole for no apparant reason.
there's POSSIBLY a few too many pieces of debris for such a small chunk of wall.

for test rendering, if your lighting is a bit off, try setting the environment colour to white so you can see the debris that floats upwards, at the moment it kinda disappears intot he black background and it's tough to see what's heppening.

the gravity is working well though and the pacing is pretty damn good. it really just needs a little polishing, nice work!

There is a small update to my site in the form of a 'work in progress' page. It has a short 2 second clip of a projectile hitting a wall and a chunk being taken out of it.

This took a while to get looking how it does but was worth the time even though it is not finished, there is a small puff of dust that comes out ni the impact and the pieces fall quite well.

Advice would be good, the main problem is the lighting and i don't seem to be able to get it looking right. :( the projectile looks naff needs to be changed to something but couldn't think what. I am thinking of doing some cool camera angles with the scene if it gets sorted out a bit.

As you mite have guessed i have re-installed 3d max 7 as this scene took about 2 hours to get to the stage it's at. With me rendering it about 9 times till it looked like it does.
