Yes, they're at it again. The Daily Mail have taken their crusade against all things they don't understand by condemning the decision to put Japanese Manga in schools.

The books are vetted by the School's councils, but the Mail once again shows their ignorance of everything by not undertanding the difference between comic books and Japanese Manga.

Only a fool would suggest that reading an adaption of Spirited Away (to give a well known example) would lead to 'harder' material which is often read by adults in Japan. It would be like suggesting children shouldn't read books, in case it gets them involved in horror or porn based reading material, or not watching Bambi on video, because it will eventually lead the kids to something by Ron Jeremy.

Daily Mail, well done, you've done it again...

Mm, it strikes me that the vast majority of the Japanese animation is not much more than Dogtanian and the Three Muskahound-type moralising with better animation and more realistic violence. Perfectly fine for kids, and diverting enough for anyone above the age of 19. If it happens to be on the TV at the time. (and now we can cue a fanboy raging at us for not knowing the difference between manga and anime...)

That said, I'd rather read Manga than the Daily Mail. I'd rather read Mein Kampf than the Daily Mail. To borrow a phrase, the Mail is journalism by people who can't write, for people who can't read.

Still quite enjoy Akira, but it does get odd. ;)

I know exactly what you mean. Half the time it's like they wear a "I watch Foreign!! films me" badge, and demand respect.

I bought Akira and enjoyed it to a point, until (if I remember rightly) it all went distinctly odd in a stadium towards the end?

And yeah, my only real exposure to manga fans have been Belldandy and somebody else who keeps going on about it here - but they also talk constantly about watching "Extreme Asia" horror films, which hardly helps the image I have of manga fans.
I'm sure people can offer loads of titles that don't involve demonsexgrope finales but I don't really care.

I used to quite enjoy anime (I've got three Akira cells with custom made backgrounds on my wall. Still beautiful artwork.)

.........then I grew up.

You've seen Legend of the Overfiend then?

I'm not overly fussed by Manga or anime, but I do find it difficult to give it fair judgement when the only person I've ever had any contact with who is a massive fan is Belldandy.

Dragonrape cartoon bannings!!!!!
Wide-eyed schoolgirl demon mouthsex rampage!!!!

I don't like manga, I think it's for nerdy sociopaths that are incapable of forming relationships with people that don't require unpacking and inflating.
I personally think it leads to nothing more than an appreciation for breathing heavily through one's mouth and a fixed stare at 13yr old schoolgirls with overly small mouths and massive round eyes...but each to their own.

And to the bloke moaning that we've lost our character and likes The Daily Mail?

We are talking about the Daily Mail here, you know.
"Stop" and "think" are not words to be used around such a waste of trees.

Ahaha.

Sheesh. Do they not stop and think that maybe this 'obscene' material is only available to those who look for it?

I bet these books within the library are just pokemon annuals.
