It's been, what, four years since they released a game worth playing?

I bought my N64 for Super Smash Bros. I only got OoT because it was Ł9 in a bargain bin but it was one of my better buys.

He implied it! :-P

And I'd argue that Zelda sold few N64's to people who weren't diehard Snes fans, except maybe in Japan where they're all about the adventure games.

As you can see Strafio. He didn't say 'as massive as Goldeneye'.

He said they sold the system.

You're disagreeing with something he neither said or implied.

Not really.
Not the same way that Goldeneye was.

Sure, Zelda and Perfect Dark may have seen rises in N64 sales on release, but they did NOTHING compared to Goldeneye.
Who liked Zelda?
I never heard ONE person rave on about Zelda unless:
a) They had it.
b) They'd gotten caught up in the media hype of Nintendo's "best game EVER".

EVERYONE loved Goldeneye.
Heck, even Sony fanboys had a soft spot for it.
I got hooked on Goldeneye after 2 multiplayer games.
I just had to wait until my 2 brothers got hooked to before I could pool our finances to get an N64.

This was someone who'd already dismissed the N64 yesterdays news and that the Dreamcast was the next big thing. Changed with just 2 goes.
Dringo, you personally know what I'm like at changing opinions. :-)

The N64's rise in sales with Zelda?
Sure it happened, but the only people who could POSSIBLY be excited about Zelda were already very interested in things Nintendo and were well on their way to getting it anyway.

Perfect Dark?
Don't get me wrong, people loved Perfect Dark as well.
And plenty of people were excited about the "next Goldeneye" coming about.
But most were pretty disappointed when they actually played it.
A lot of my friends who loved Goldeneye didn't like Perfect Dark.
Some of them later ended up having an N64 a while and got hooked on PD then, but not until they'd given it a good go to get into.

Nothing TOUCHED Goldeneye when it came to selling N64's.
Nearly everyone I knew who got one got it with Goldeneye, for Goldeneye.
Other games were almost and after thought in comparison.
The only games that have had bigger cult followings are Pokémon and GTA3!

Zelda and PD were massive system sellers.

There's a difference though.

Any prejudice before the first go is overcomable.
They'll be happy to give it a go, just to "see how crap it is."
Once they've taken that first go, the impression sticks for good.
Although you're right, that prejudice is also an important factor.

That's why Goldeneye worked so well.
It looked good and hooked your from your first go.
Mario 64 did a bit.
Zelda and Perfect Dark took a little getting into.

That's why Zelda and PD were perfect treats for people who owned the system, while games like Mario and Goldeneye were system sellers.

Exactly. But they had to be MADE to play the game in the first place.

This is where a well known licence can help and if it's a different licence from the ones currently favoured by the developer it stands a good chance of bringing in a fresh crop of gamers. Obviously once they've experienced the gameplay they'll be more open to the weirder looking titles by the same developer.

It's not just about the 'first go' people have to want to try it in the first place.

Then I suggest you try co-op mode with a few deathmatches thrown in.

I always use weapon smash, it's the only mild sense of satisfaction I can get from the game.
