They add to the experience, in particular the Z button as it creates the impression that you are actually holding a gun. I'm almost tempted to point the thing at the screen and blow the brains out of a Dinosaur (in actual fact why don't Nintendo make the controller it self a light gun?).
Controllers can do so much more which people haven't even touched upon. The analogue stick for example if there are 2 like on Sony's (and Gamecube's) controllers you can use them both for arm movements. Each separate analogue stick would represent a movement of an arm. An example could be a boxer each analogue stick could represent a fist on a boxer and the different thumps would depend on the arc of the movement you make with the analogue stick.
Imagine a multiplayer game like this where everyone frantically trying to move the analogue stick to block and hit your friend.
It could be the same with ores on a boat. Developers are already using the analogue stick in different ways, such as Mario where you swing Bowser around by using the analogue stick like a wheel. What’s stopping developers using the analogue stick like a steering wheel?
If developers could realise that controllers could be used in different ways we may be playing a larger variety of games.

However you need more control for rotation of wrists and the actual person`s body movement, rather than being stationary.
Good idea though, its just it may be a little too complex. Robotics control like that takes a lot of operations.
N64: Comfortable and the Z button were really easy to reach, and that was crucial for games like goldeneye.
Playstation 2: Okay, not different in shape to the PS1 pad, but why change it? The PS1 controller was easy to hold and all the buttons were easy to reach, apart from maybe the triangle button.
Also, it has a new feature where it matters how hard you press it (aka Pressure Pad)
Gamecube: Looks weird, but everything is included. I haven’t held one yet so I can’t say if it’s easy to hold or not, but knowing Nintendo it should be great!
I think game company’s are running out of new ways to improve joypads now days. I mean, a joypad is something you hold and press buttons to play games. I’m not sure what else can be added. We have 3D sticks, pressure pads, wireless controllers, and rumbling controllers…what else could they add to make them better?
Nintendo started off with rectangular controllers with the same layout as the original Gameboy. I don't know what Sega started off with but the Megadrives controller, although it felt cheap and tacky, had a nicer feel.
The SNES controller however, felt comfortable in the hand, the buttons were easy to reach, and it ment that games with fast action were easily playable without any hassle at all!
Then when Nintendo made the Playstation, but for whatever reason let Sony have all rights to it, Sony kept the controllers design but had to chage the buttons slightly because Nintendo had copyrighted, or whatever the term is, the D-pad, which was a good move...
The N64 controller was the best designed controller of it's time, it had easy to hold handles, loads of buttons for more functions in games, and Memory, Rumble and other accessories were able to slot into the back. This made Sony try to compete by sticking two analogue sticks on the controller and making it rumble automatically without buying any addons...
The Dreamcast controller was, in my opinion, pants! if felt wierd and although it was better quality than the Megadrive controllers, I just wouldn't be able to play as much on a dreamcast because of it.
Third Party PC controller producers, copied the SNES controllers exactly but put a round D-pad on instead of the cross, which, by Competition Pro, felt cheap and tacky, but it shows that the SNES controller was still considered as one of the best! Maybe cos it's cheap to produce and is good for most games?
The Playstation 2 controller hasn't changed at all from it's original, but I don't think it's anything to do with the way the controller feels or it's quality, I think it's because Sony are trying to look good by saying that you can use your old PS accessories on the new PS2.
The gamecube controller is a cross between the SNES and the N64 controllers. It's got a similar shape to the SNES, but with 2 analogue sticks and a Z-trigger button. I think that, although it looks wierd, it's gonna be Nintendo's best controller yet! Nintendo have always improved their controllers, and no one can deny that!

This is funny stuff Tarrant. You should win an award for writing things of such a high calibre!
The thing about the bog standard joypad is you can play a variety of games all with the same controller. However you might find playing the next Zelda game with a steering wheel quite tough.
