My mum got Ecuador in the sweepstake at work. It is a bit of a surprise that they got to the second round.

Germany were far more interesting in winning the group than Ecuador were. After Germany scored early on, there was only going to be one result. Ecuador rested a lot of players and there was a real lack of urgency in their play. The wingers that did so well were ineffective and the defence couldn't cope.

I don't think you can tell much about either team in this game. Ecuador were content to be in the 2nd round for the first time and Germany just played their game, which is fairly attacking. Ballack looked pretty good in the win and the defence were hardly troubled.

The other game in the group was Poland V Costa Rica and only pride was at stake. They were pretty evenly matched in the first half. Costa Rica took the lead with a hard hit free kick that whooshed past the wall and through the keepers legs. Poland were level pretty soon afterward with a close range shot and they went in level at half time.

The second half, Poland started to show their superiority and although Wanchope was causing a nuisance, his defence let him down as Bosacki, the scorer of the first Poland goal, scored a close range header and Poland held on to win and leave Costa Rica bottom of the group. If you concede 9 goals in 3 games, you deserve to be bottom of the group I suppose.

I want to know why Kawada likes Ecuador so much and why such a small and poor country is doing so well. I guess those qualities ahve nothing to do with the making of good players. I don't think America are doing that well despite rating doing very well there.

Are we playing today? I'm hoping we win. Haven't seen any matches yet but my girlfriend said we'll watch the semi finals.

If we win the game or draw will will be drawn against Ecuador. If england beat sweden there is a chance for T and T to go through if they win there game by a big margin. Would be a good game TandT V Germany.

Well, I never say that England fans are the best fans. No matter how good the England fans are, the idiots that cause trouble will always tarnish their reputation.

South Korea certainly have passionate fans.

Anyway, the last of the groups to play their 2nd game was Monday and Switzerland have given themselves a great chance to qualify for the 2nd round. They were very solid in their match against Togo. Togo started well but crashed out of the tournament with a whimper. Togo never really troubled the Swiss, although they should have had a penalty when it was 1-0. The 2nd Swiss goal right at the end was a lovely strike.

The 2nd game was Saudi Arabia V Ukraine and the early goal summed the game up. Saudi Arabia always look like they are going to concede goals. It was a walk in the park for Ukraine as they strolled through and scored 4. That does wonders for Ukraine's goal difference after their 4-0 defeat to Spain. Saudi Arabia look pretty much out now with only Spain left to play.

The final game was Spain V Tunisia and it was a game Spain dominated but Tunisia had the lead for about an hour. They scored after about 10 minutes and looked solid, doing the defensive job that a lot of other teams have implemented.

It took about 70 minutes until Spain finally scored and the floodgates then opened. 2 goals in 5 minutes turned the game in Spain's favour and Spain then got a penalty to seal the victory and a place in the 2nd round. Fernando Torres is now the top scorer in the tournament with 3 goals.

I'm delighted as Spain is my tip and it wasn't looking good for a lot of the game. Unfortunately, it seems that Spain may probably have to play France in the 2nd round.

Congrats to my Korean brothers in taking a point off the scummy Frenchies :-D

And to all those pundits who are constantly going *England fans best in the world blah blah blah* i think the Korean fans absolutely destroyed that myth last night. Great fans.

I'm not surprised Kawada. :)

The first game, yesterday as I type this, was Croatia V Japan and I think Croatia will be kicking themselves. Croatia were given a penalty and had a number of good chances but the chances went and Kawaguchi made a great save to deny Srna from the spot. Kawaguchi also got away with a dodgy bounce from the pitch that took the ball over his foot and just wide.

The 0-0 result played into the hands of one of the 2 teams in the next game, Brazil V Australia. The first half was mostly Brazil but they looked a bit chilled out again like the first game. Adriano scored early in the second half and the introduction of Harry Kewell made it a decent tussle. Ronaldo was a little more energetic but that just seemed to make him more useless. Poor touches, poor runs, just poor.

Australia battled, Kaka hit the bar and should have scored late on, Kewell had good chances, Viduka had a chance but Brazil finished the resistance in the 89th minute. That means Brazil qualify for the next round and they have barely got out of 2nd gear. Australia still have a great chance to qualify. Japan look like the outsiders, as their last game is Brazil. Croatia will have to beat Australia to qualify.

The last game was France V South Korea and if there was ever a case of a team shooting themselves in the foot, this was it. France looked comfortable, if a little too comfortable, after they scored early and they had a couple of good chances to kill the game off. Barthez was just a spectator in the first half.

The second half saw South Korea just work their way back into the game slowly and then dealt the killer blow after a good spell with just 10 minutes to go. That goal sparked France into life but it was too late. They should have made sure a long time before that. France will be totally shellshocked but they brought it on themselves. South Korea were plucky and never gave up.

If Togo bother to turn up, the group could be anyones for the taking.
