well, not the ULTIMATE PC, but I would like to know everything I would need to build one of the best PC's going, the CPU, Graphics Card, RAM, everything, so.... what would I need.

P.S. money is not a problem.

A decent PSU will have 8 or more molex connectors. And you wouldn't use anything less than a decent PSU unless you like the smell of cooked circuitry and the sound of fan bearings.

> Thats your opinion...

I'd take your computer over a £1K machine, but not by much - the returns for your investment once you start spending more than a certain amount on a computer start dropping off drastically. It amuses/dismays me that so many people on this forum shell out so much for high end components, that will have halved in value in six months and be worthless in two years. Most of them are kiddies wowed by ritzy statistics and neon lights. On another forum I frequent there is a saying: "a fool and his parents money are easily parted".

Fair enough. I was just going for the best card (without a front i/o panel) with 7.1 sound to match the speakers.

You need a full tower case for a decent system to fit, and those are even more expensive.

They are 70p each for gods sake, just stick em on the back panel of the case...

He did say money was no object, so I went for RAIDed raptors

You shound'nt really use burners as defualt drives, as they tend to be slower even at the same spin speed.

You can't buy the windows at overclockers, but I would get one elsewere, and the front fans would glow out the mesh anyway, creating a nice effect.

Your average PSU has 5 molex connectors, and that simply wouln't be enough. Look at the image (http://stevesmiscellany.8bit.co.uk/computercomponents.jpg).

Stevie's machine is £2645.50 excluding delivery and is still inferior to many.

Athlon 64 FXs are better, by far, but why bother with them? If money is no object lets build an 8 way Opteron, because we all need 17.6 GHz in the one box don't we? And only one graphics card? If we bung in several PCI ones we could have more monitors?

Why not watercooling?

Case badges? Let's get a Da Vinci to glue onto the side...

Meanwhile, back on planet earth, I would say either wait until June and buy an Athlon 64 3200+ or better on a socket 939 motherboard.

If you need the system now, then by all means get an Athlon 64 3200+ anyway on the current socket 754, it is still the best readily available platform. I also would avoid that RAM, far too expensive considering there is better faster stuff out there.

As for the hard drives... unless you are a proper power user (in which case you wouldn't be asking on here) skip the RAID 0 configured Raptors, they are noisy, they are expensive, they are fairly small. Also skip the external hard drive. Just get the one 160 GB Maxtor drive for £70.

Skip the 16x DVD drive and just buy the one DVD burner. The burner listed is rather good though, I use it. The power supply is expensive, but Globalwins are not a patch on say a Antec, or even a Fortron; both of which are considerably cheaper. Drop the hard drive cooling systems, as they are unnecessary. Also UV cathodes and fans are totally pointless - not because I'm against case mods, I'm not, but simply because you won't see your rainbow of colours in a case with no side window.

I also think the case is rather pricey. "Y" power splitters won't be needed at all either, let alone 6 of them.

Bottom line is that is an overloaded, bloated system that is power hungry, extremely expensive and won't perform any better than a system I could build for a grand.

Now if you would care to post an actual budget we could give you a decent specification. If you keep some things from your current PC you will save even more. There is no point in spending vast amounts of money just for the sake of it.

I recently benched my 2.4ghz Athlon way above this chip. However, you should really be looking at Athlon 64FX chips.

What's your budget? Can we spend, say, a couple of hundred thousand pounds?
