Take note of the games that interest you (obviously some do, otherwise you wouldn't be considering a PS2), go to a specialist games shop (i.e. Game, EB etc. and not Dixons, Currys and the like), and ask for a demo of those games, then make up your own mind. If you're offering to spend £300-plus, most places will be only too happy to give you a demo.
If you want a DVD player, buy a DVD player. For DVD's PS2 varies from adequate to good, depending on the disc played and who you listen to.
