I'm thinking of buying an iPod on tuesday (make the most of cheap Canadian prices while i'm here) and i was just wondering what those who already have one think of it. Is it worth buying in your opinion and also does it work on your computer straight out the box because the one i'm looking at is talking about a firewire interface and because i'm as computer literate as a dead cat i have no idea whether my computer will be compatible with it seeing as i only have USB ports.

So any help is much appreciated.

The only thing putting me off the iPod is that firewire interface thing. With the Zen i can just buy it and because it's USB2.0 compatible i don't need to buy anything else to get it to work. Plus i must be the only person who actually thinks the Zen looks nicer.

When i get downtown on Tuesday it will probably come down to which is in stock and which is cheapest

I never liked the iPod that much, just don't like the white generally. Main reason for buying a Zen was the price for me - and the battery thing, you can just take off the cover and swap a zen battery any time, much easier spare than the massive iPod battery pack thingy.

It's not as easy to just drag files on to and carr ythem around, as you need software installed on the pc to be able to read them, but for what you get for the money, it's great.

I have a Nomad Jukebox Zen Extra (I think....) and I can definitely recommend it. It is bigger than the iPod but it's not really that chunky. Its storage is incredible, and the sound quality is superb. Its easy to use, and uploading songs takes no time at all, and all you need is a USB port.

That's just tosh. My iPod lives hidden in a dock under a shelf on my desk, or in my pocket - the simple reason for iPods supreme brilliance is the interface; from iTunes being just about the best thing ever to zipping around through menus when on the go. While I’ve no doubt a number of people choose it over other MP3 players because of the style factor, it has numerous other benefits, which is why I bought my first three years ago where 3rd party software was needed for PC support and everyone thought it was a cassette player.

They have an educational store which offers around 10% discount on the normal prices. You just need to enter the name of the Uni you attend (not sure if schools are included)
Sometimes they ask you to scan your student card and send them it.

If you phone them up though sometimes they take more money off. :-)

Fine by me.

Like I said, it's when it's featured in a style guide I get annoyed. Ipods are excellent, if a little overpriced, pieces of equipment. So is my Zen.

Could some please help me??
I have just purchased an ipod which i would like to use as an external hard drive between my mac and my pc. I have formatted it as a mac ipod, and it wouldn't transfer to my pc, so i reformated it to my pc and now it won't register on my mac, i was told it should come up as just a hard drive icon (which is all i want!) and it doesn't.
Would it matter that i'm only running 10.1?
any ideas?

You can only have it as a Windows drive OR an OS X drive, not both.

As far as I know, anyway ...
