Pretty much confirmed news:

The Revolution will also be a wireless router for the home, connect broadband to it and it will allow nearby consoles to link and go online. Such as a DS for example.

Rumours:

Revolution will be VERY cheap, will be only a little more powerful than a Gamecube and vastly inferior to X-box 360 and PS3. There will be multiple controllers, touch screen, gyro and camera are all being touted.

If the latter is true then I told you Nintendo are gunning for a different market.

But as Memo said, the PSX did perfectly well against the N64 - 3D games with the d-pad. Of course, Sony soon realised how much better an analogue stick was. But still, thousands bought the PSX when a better alternative was avaliable.

Why wouldn't the same thing happen again?

I appriciate your optimism, Dringo. Someone's got to be.
But right now, I'm hanging off a cliff and Ninty seem determined to prise my fingers off.

Mabye there'll be a button you hold to tell it to read it as being 'level' and then when you let go it lets you turn by how much the gyroscope is tilted.

This way you could setup for corners beforehand in racers.

So you will have to tilt the thing all over the place?
Ahaha, how rubbish.

Meaning you'll have to hold the thing perfectly level when you don't want to move, and can't get excited or anything, at the risk of driving over a cliff. And it'll knacker your hands out.

No because I haven't got a clue what Nintendo are planning.

I'd hate to see a low spec console, Nintendo are placing emphasis on hardware and so make the hardware good!

But I can see why Nintendo are making a very different console.

As I've said Nintendo are fighting a war they cannot win if they fight head to head with 2 of the richest conglomorates in the world.

So Nintendo have to side step.

Nintendo are trying to make gaming appealing again, moving a controller to move the characters rather than using a traditional stick with a touch screen to shoot, pause etc... could actually work and appeal to a new generation of gamers. New gamers for Nintendo.

Whether or not you think a new controller with change gaming is clearly down to preference. You say analogue stick didn't change gaming? You bring up some crappy point about sales (yawn) and decide to ignore the fact that the analogue stick pratically comes a standard with 3D gaming. Imagine gaming without it.

I don't know what they're planning. Whether they'll totally alienate "traditional games" like it is being suggested here or if they'll do a DS and have room for both.

I can't argue because the thing is when someone says "well Nintendo would have to do this" and we don't know what they plan. Other than the wireless online stuff.

It's such a complex argument to deal with that I can't see the point.

And then people moan about graphics and say the analogue stick does nothing.

I don't argue with these people.

There's 2 options left:

1) Mind control. Like whoever it was recently had something put in his head so he could control his robotic arm or something. Except Reggie's not getting anywhere near my braiy pulp.

2) The one I said: like a touch-screen, but the button form and raise up out of the surface for each game. So you don't have to keep looking down, and can actually feel stuff. Except that's probably impossible.

No doubt they'll be normal controllers but with gyroscopes built in so you can turn the function on and tilt it for certain games/bits of games.

That's the only sensible thing that it can be and I remember this being mentioned a few years back in some article about Nintendo noticing people having a tendency to lean when playing racers.

Couldn't have put it better myself.
Controllers have one and only one purpose: for controlling games. They have absolutely no use outside of this. They were custom made for the job ... and as such, are perfect for it.

Why ram other technologies into things, when you've already got the perfect tool at your fingertips?

Like most of us agree, the way you control games at the moment is perfect.

A gyroscopic controller wouldn't offer any benefits, and would most likely make things harder (use a steering wheel to play a football game go on). It also wouldn't change the games at all, asit's basically just a replacement analog stick.

A touchpad would just be a mouse, but an inferior one. If the controller has a touchpad then it's basically a PC without a keyboard. Great

A touchSCREEN is out of the question, as it would mean the controllers would be hideously expensive and also that you'd spend you're whole time looking at your controller - why not just buy a DS?

Voice Recognition is a dead end. We all know that

Camera movement recognition is limited in its scope, and doesn't really allow for anything other than quick arcade games. You can't play an RPG with a camera.

Other ideas like pressure sensitive handles, etc, would have similar difficulties, in that the limited use of the input would limit the kind of games that could use it to 1 or 2 genres.

So what other sorts of control could it be? Any ideas?

I wouldn't be so sure of that.
