So, if anyone's into punk/post-punk/emo/hardcore... whatever the hell you wanna label things, please chat here about music, albums, gigs, gossip and help me find some more cool bands to go see live.
I like stuff from loads of different genres, but the punk stuff I'm currently into includes Alkaline Trio, Braid, Fugazi, Minor Threat, Gorilla Biscuits, Lagwagon, NOFX, Taking Back Sunday, Brand New, Matchbook Romance, Saves The Day, Rocket From The Crypt, Jawbreaker, Lawrence Arms, Boys Night Out, Hot Water Music, The Ataris etc. etc.
Need more emo-core music though. I.e not overtly depressing but rocky.
Elliott!
Other people say just taking music in a new and exciting direction is a 'punk' thing to do, even if that direction wouldn't normally be classified as 'punk'...
There's some articles on 'punk' on my website... (more shameless plugging...) One written by a friend, one by myself, and there's also an interview someone did with me for a project about punk in the 70s and now. If you're interested...
'Punk' as in the rebelliousness, and 'punk' as a type of music, or as you said 'punk' as a 'DIY' method of music....

Lost Prophets do not count as punk really... (Bear in mind this is 'popular opinion', any kind of genre classification is subjective...)
Offspring seem to be getting poppier by the album now (though I haven't heard any of the new one). But back in Smash/IxNay era they were class. 'Smash' is an amazing song, and the whole album is good. Ixnay is also a great album.
> Why do bands that people hold up as being 'punk greats' sound really

Because GreenDay were a great pop-punk band. The fact they got popular doesn't change that. When I listen to stuff like Blink or other big pop-punk these days, I usually just get bored because I find GreenDay were much better. Fugazi were also pionneers of post-hardcore, and I guess it helps that Ian MacKaye was in Minor Threat, probably the biggest Straight Edge Hardcore band ever... (although Loki might argue Gorrilla Biscuits were...)
> Surely punks more a state of mind now: Are pitchshifter punk? Are
> Whale punk?
Yeah, punk is more a state of mind really. Loads of people now hate the whole 'emo' / 'emocore' / 'screamo' thing and can't wait til that 'phase' is over, loads more see it as the way forward, blah blah. No one will agree on what is truly punk because the meaning of the word is subjective. But I'd say punk has always been more than a simple genre, Fugazi may not sound particularly 'punk' but they have an extremely DIY attitude which fits in with 'punk' values so...

I was damn lucky. A mate text me the night before they went on sale asking if I wanted to go with her! I am now in debt...

I heard rumours that Mad Caddies were the support... I wouldn't mind either way, both class bands, saw Caddies at Reading though, but I was pretty tired at the time.
> They're old enough to drink!?
And to be dancing round with my mates to NOFX tunes apparently. Somehow it just doesn't seem right.
I'm obviously very jealous of my mates' good fortune and deeply regret my decision to go home to bed rather meet such true pioneers of the punk/pop scene ;)

Yeah rocking in your pushchair!
